The unwind apparatus provides for a multi-axis robot (10) and an end effector (40, 140) operatively connected to the multi-axis robot (10). The end effector (40, 140) provides for a stationary motor (65), a rotational coupling (55) mechanically coupled to the stationary motor (65), and, a mandrel (60) mechanically coupled to the rotational coupling (55). The mandrel (60) is capable of releasably engaging the convolutely wound rolls of web material.

The mandrel (300) has a mandrel shaft (320) with a longitudinal axis (340), a plurality of mandrel arms (310) extending from the mandrel shaft (320), and at least one expansion element (330) disposed upon a respective each of the mandrel arms (310). The mandrel shaft (320) is capable of rotating about the longitudinal axis (340). Each of the mandrel arms (310) is disposed and rotatable about the longitudinal axis (340). The at least one expansion element (330) is expandable radially away from the respective mandrel arm (310) relative to the longitudinal axis (340). The convolutely wound web material is disposable about each of the mandrel arms (310). Further, the at least one expansion element (330) is expandable into contacting and releasable engagement with the convolutely wound web material. The convolutely wound web material is fixably and releasably disposed about each of the mandrel arms (310).
