The substrate thickness is about 2.70-3.00micrometers at eight micrometers from the blade tip, about 4.44-5.00micrometers at sixteen micrometers from the blade tip with a thickness ratio measured at four micrometers and eight micrometers between 0.56-0.62, and a thickness ratio measured at four micrometers and sixteen micrometers between 0.32-0.40. The blade edge shape is defined by equation w=ad n where "a" is between 0.50-0.62 and "n" is between 0.76-0.80. An included angle of less than 7° is measured at a distance of forty micrometers or greater from the blade tip. A nitrided substrate may also be provided.

The substrate has a thickness of greater than about 2.30 micrometers measured at a distance of four micrometers from the blade tip, a thickness of greater than about 4.26 micrometers measured at a distance of eight micrometers from the blade tip, and greater than about 7.93 micrometers measured at a distance of sixteen micrometers from the blade tip. A hard coating joined to the substrate has a thickness of 700 Angstroms to about 3500 Angstroms. An outer layer joined to a coated substrate is discontinuous. The outer layer may be produced from a dispersion comprising about 0.03g/L or less of telomer or from about 0.5% solids or less of telomer by weight of composition. The novel razor blade cuts at less than 100% cutting efficiency using a single fiber cutting efficiency measure.

This thickness ratio is between 0.165-0.185. The substrate thickness is about 2.70-3.00µm at 8µm from the blade tip, about 4.44-5.00 µm at 16µm from the blade tip with a thickness ratio measured at 4µm and 8µm between 0.56-0.62, and a thickness ratio measured at 4µm and 16µm between 0.32-0.40. The edge shape may be defined by equation w=ad n with "a" between 0.50-0.62 and "n" between 0.76-0.80. A semi-included angle less than 7 is measured at a distance of 40µm or greater from the blade tip. This substrate will have substantially no cracks.
