    • An apparatus for internally venting a product tank (12) in a packaging machine (10) including a filling tube (16) having a first end (18) extending from a first opening (20) of the product tank (12) and an air collection mechanism (14) having a filling tube opening (24) adapted to receive a second end (22) of the filling tube (16). The air collection mechanism (14) extends below the second end (22) of the filling tube (16). A vent pipe (28) is connected to a second opening (30) of the product tank (12) and to a vent pipe opening (32) in the air collection mechanism (14). The filling tube (16) and the vent tube (28) are separately connected to both the product tank (12) and the air collection mechanism (14). Air pressure, arising from operating the packaging machine (10), is directed from the air collection mechanism (14) through the vent pipe (28) and into the product tank (12). Such air proceeds through the vent pipe (28) and replaces product in the product tank (12) as the product is dispensed into the carton during filling.

    • An apparatus for accurately filling packages in a filling machine (10). The filling machine (10) overcomes the problems of filling inaccuracies by providing means (22) for continuously controlling the rate of inflow filling fluid into the filling machine (10). Such filling machine (10) includes a balance tank (18) for storing a product fluid and a valve mechanism for controlling the flow of product fluid to the balance tank (18). The opening of the valve mechanism (16) is responsive to an input signal for controlling the size thereof in a generally continuous manner whereby a plurality of different sized openings may be used. A level probe (20) is positioned in the balance tank (18) for providing an output indicative of the level of the product fluid in the balance tank (18). A controller (22, 28, 30, 42, 44 and 46) responsive to the output signal of the level probe is used to provide the input signal to the valve mechanism in response to the sensed product fluid level to control the flow of product fluid into the balance tank (18).

    • A fill system (10) for filling a container (25) is set forth. The container (25) to be filled has a bottom portion (and a plurality of sidewalls defining a container cross section). The filling system (10) comprises a fill pipe (125) having a product inlet (135) and a product outlet (140), a valve rod (155) disposed in the fill pipe (125), a flexible outlet extension (75), and an umbrella-shaped sealing member (165) having a bottom portion (170). The valve rod (155) and the sealing member (165) are movable between a first position in which the sealing member (165) engages and seals the product outlet (140) and a second position in which the sealing member (165) is disengaged from the product outlet (140). The bottom portion (170) of the sealing member (165) is preferably shaped to conform to the interior bottom portion of the container (25). The flexible outlet extension (75) extends from the product outlet (140) and is dimensioned to engage and conform to the sidewalls of the container (25) during filling thereby to inhibit mixing of product and air during the filling cycle. Additionally, the bottom portion (170) of the sealing member (165) may be used to engage the bottom of the container to assist in displacing air from a sealing region defined by the flexible outlet extension (75) and the walls of the container (25).
