    • A radio access network (11) facilitates transmission of a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service to plural user equipment units served by a radio base station. A radio network controller node (26) includes in a first message (70) of a Common Transport Channel Setup procedure an indication that sharing of a common transport bearer (60) involved in a session of the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service is allowed. A radio base station (28) makes a determination whether to share the common transport bearer (60) among user equipment units (30) situated in plural cells (C) served by the radio base station (28). If the determination is positive, the radio base station (28) includes in a second message (80) of the Common Transport Channel Setup procedure an identification of an already-established channel to be used as the shared common transport bearer. The radio network controller (26) then uses the already-established channel as the shared common transport bearer for transmitting Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service user data to user equipment units (30) situated in plural cells served by the radio base station.

    • The present invention relates to broadcast and/or multicast services in mobile communication networks. Control (105) and user (107’, 107’’) planes for services directed to a user (50A-C) in a multicast group (60) are allowed to be separated from each other. At least two user equipments (50A-C) (belonging to the same multicast group) receives service data over a common user plane (107’) over an Iu interface (17). In cases where user equipment (50C) is controlled by a SRNC (22B) different from the CRNC (22A), a radio network subsystem application protocol is extended by procedures communicating service information from the SRNC (22B) to the CRNC (22A). The control plane (105) of such a user equipment (50C) can thus have a separate path compared with a common user plane (107’). Preferably, the user plane (107’) is arranged directly over the Iu interface (17) between a serving support node (12) and the CRNC (22A), while control planes (105) may have a path over the Iur interface (14).

    • A radio connection is supported between the mobile station and a source base station associated with a source cell. The mobile station transmits information to the source base station over a shared uplink data communications channel used by multiple mobiles. A handover message is received from the source base station indicating that the source base station has initiated a handover of the radio connection over to a target base station for the target base station to support the radio connection. The handover fails. In response, a message is sent from the mobile station to the source base station requesting that the source base station continue to support the radio connection without requiring the mobile station to perform a radio channel procedure competing with other mobile stations requesting a new radio connection be supported by the source base station.

During operation, the radio network controller (240) provides the MBMS data over the common transport bearer (245) and the radio base station (250) retransmits the MBMS data over the common transport channels (255) to the plural cells. If the MBMS data over the common transport bearer (245) arrives outside of time-of-arrival windows of any common transport bearer (255), then the radio network controller (240) adjusts the transmission accordingly.
