    • A disc brake rotor (10, 100, 200) comprises mounting portion (14), a first friction portion (18) which provides an annular friction surface (22), a second friction portion (20) which provides the other annular friction surface (24), a connecting portion (26) which joins said mounting portion (18) to said first friction portion, and vanes (28) which extend between said friction portions (18, 20), and support said second friction portion (20). The vanes (28) define cooling ducts (29) extending radially outwardly of the rotor (10, 100, 200). The first (18) and the second (20) friction portions vary in thickness in radial directions, the first friction portion (18) having its greatest thickness at a radius which is greater than the radius at which the second friction portion (20) has its greatest thickness.

    • A disc brake rotor (10) provides two oppositely-facing annular friction surfaces (16, 18) which, in the operation of the brake, are engaged by blocks of friction material to decelerate the rotor. The rotor (10) comprises a first portion (12) which provides one of the friction surfaces (16) and a second portion (14) which provides the other (18). Said first and second portions (12, 14) are arranged in spaced parallel relationship and are joined by vanes (26) between which are defined cooling ducts (28). The rotor (10) also comprises air inlet ports (34, 36) passing through said first and said second portions (12, 14) in areas which are radially inward of said vanes (26). In order to reduce vibration, the number of inlet ports (34) which pass through the first portion (12) of the rotor (10) is different to the number of inlet ports (36) which pass through said second portion (14).

    • A machine tool (10) comprises a support (20) mounted for rotation about a machining axis (22), a first motor (28) operable to rotate the support about the machining axis, a tool holder (30) mounted on the support for rotation about a tool positioning axis (32) which is parallel to and off-set from the machining axis, a second motor (50) operable to rotate the tool holder about the tool positioning axis, and control means (60). For a constant diameter machining circle, the support (20) and the tool holder (30) are rotated about their respective axes at equal angular velocities so that they rotate as a unit. To adjust the diameter of the machining circle, one of the motors (28, 50) operates for a period at a different angular velocity to the other motor, thereby altering the position of the tool holder (30) relative to the support (20) about the tool positioning axis (32).
