    • An automated apparatus for removing a portion or chip of seeds in a research or commercial program for analysis is disclosed. Seed subject to analysis are placed in the apparatus. A vibrating table moves individual seeds to a pick-up station. Properly presented seeds are moved to a sampling station by an arm. A laser cuts off a portion or chip of the seed, leaving the seed viable. The removed chip drops into a preselected cell of a segmented tray and the seed is dropped into a different preselected cell of a segmented tray. The seed and chip are subjected to analysis for one or more selected characteristics. The results of the analysis are recorded, such as in a database, with the chip results or data correlated to the seed results or data so that research or commercial decisions regarding the seed are facilitated. The apparatus automates the chipping procedure greatly increasing the throughput of the sampling and greatly reducing the labor required to carry out the sampling.

    • Apparatus for the automation of processing of seeds including a vibratory rail for advancing individual seeds to a desired location and for orienting each seed to a common and consistent orientation is described. The rail has a side member and a side wall that together define a cross-sectional profile that is different at the entry of the seed than at the approach to the desired location and the side member is adjustable relative to said side wall to adapt the profile of the rail to improve the efficiency of consistency in orientation of seed of different sizes, shapes or weights. In a preferred embodiment, rails specific to a species of seed are adapted be use the same mounting sites and at least some of the same sensors and seed removal devices so that a machine for the automated processing of seeds can be quickly and easily converted to process seeds of diverse species.

    • A flexible skewer system for providing versatile cooking upon a grill. The flexible skewer system includes an elongated flexible member, a loop extending from an end of the flexible member and a piercing implement extending from an opposite end of the flexible member. The flexible member is preferably comprised of a stainless steel cable. In use, the user is able to manipulate the shape of the flexible member about other food items on the grill while allowing the loop and piercing implement to be exterior of the grill. Alternatively, a second piercing implement may be utilized instead of a loop.
