    • A posterior vertebral stabilizer (70, 270) has a resilient member (120, 274) such as a linear spring, which operates in tension and compression. The resilient member may be kept straight by a stabilization rod (74) extending through the spring, or by a telescoping assembly (272) that encases the resilient member (274). The ends (92, 94) of the stabilizer (70, 270) are attachable to pedicles of adjacent vertebrae so that the stabilizer (70, 270) adds stiffness to control flexion and extension of the vertebrae. Two such stabilizers (70, 270) may be used, and may be connected together by a crosslink (180) designed to limit relative rotation of the stabilizers (70, 270). Thus, the stabilizers (70, 270) may restrict axial rotation and lateral bending between the vertebrae, while permitting stiffened flexion and extension. Such stabilizers (70, 270) help provide the stiffness of a healthy intervertebral disc. In the event that fusion of the joint becomes necessary, a set screw (160, 340) or other component may be used to further restrict flexion and extension.

    • An intervertebral stabilization device (12, 170) and method is disclosed. The device (12, 170) preferably includes a planar spring (20, 180) enclosed within a housing (22, 172) . The housing (122, 172) is joined to an articulation component (24, 25, 174, 175) at either end, and the articulation components (24, 25, 174, 175) have couplings (28, 178) connectable to anchoring components (19) which are securable to adjacent vertebrae. The planar spring (20, 180) can flex and retract providing relative motion between the adjacent vertebrae. The articulation components (24, 25, 174, 175) are ball and socket joints which allow the entire assembly to flexibly follow the curvature of the spine. A fusion rod (162) with articulation components and couplings (164) at either end may be substituted for the spring device. The couplings enable interchangeability between a fusion rod (162) assembly and spring assembly (12, 170) , so that dynamic stabilization can occur at one vertebral level and fusion at the adjacent vertebral level. An overhung spring assembly (250) with a sideways displaced housing (254) which allows for a shorter pedicle to pedicle displacement is also disclosed.

    • A system and method to facilitate insertion of a fusion implant (74) into the intervertebral space of a spine. The fusion implant may have a first and a second bone engaging surface (120,122) . An attachment interface (80) on an insertion tool (72) allows the implant to be releasably secured to the insertion tool, so that the insertion tool may be detached without requiring a threaded coupling. The implant may be positioned in two different orientations with respect to the insertion tool to permit usage of two different techniques to insert the implant into the intervertebral space. A recessed support member (126) in the implant creates gaps (140) , (142) between bone facing surfaces and the vertebral bodies such that bone graft material may occupy the gaps. The implant includes embedded radiographic markers (180) which facilitate radiographic detection of the orientation of the implant through the surrounding tissue.
