    • The present invention is directed to an implantable medical device and a method for power management for power efficient use of RF telemetry during, for example, conditions where long periods of continuous monitoring of the device and the patient is desired such as during MRI procedures. A protocol module adapted to, at receipt of a low power protocol indication, activate and use a low power protocol for communication between the device and external units. The protocol module is capable of switching between different communication protocols including a low power communication protocol and a default RF communication protocol depending on, for example, whether continuous long-term monitoring of the patient is performed. During the low power communication protocol, the protocol module is adapted to select parts of stored electrophysical and/or hemodynamical signal waveforms for telemetric transmission and to create communication packages having a predetermined length using the selected parts of the electrophysiological and/or hemodynamical signal waveform. Further, a transmitter is instructed to transmit the communication packages at predetermined transmission intervals and the telemetry module is instructed to power down the transmitter or set the transmitter in a lowest possible activation state during intermediate periods between the transmission intervals.

    • An implantable medical device (100) has a broadband RF receiver (172) operating within an RF band and having stored information of a characteristic receiver frequency representing the RF within the RF band at which the broadband RF receiver (172) has sufficient receiver sensitivity. The stored information is retrieved in response to a message from an external communication device and is included in a response generated by the implantable medical device (100) and transmitted to the communication device. The information enables the communication device (400) to select its transmission frequency at a subsequent transmission instance to the relevant implantable medical device (100). The chances of successful reception at the subsequent transmission instance are thereby increased.

    • The present invention teaches synchronization of an implantable medical device, IMD, (100) and an external device (200). A master (400) being one of the IMD (100) and external device (200) transmits, in a first time interval (T k ), a first reference time (t k ) associated with the first interval (T k ) to a slave (500) being the other of the IMD (100) and external device (200; 300). The slave (500) sets its clock (520) based on the reference time (t k ) and returns, in a second time interval (T k+h ), a second reference time (t k+h ) provided by the slave (500) based on the first reference time (t k ). The master (400) confirms that the slave (500) is synchronized with the master (400) if the second reference time (t k+h ) is associated with the second time interval (T k+h ). The IMD (100) can then use its synchronized clock (120) for time-stamping sampled physiological data to be transmitted to the external device (200) for processing.
