    • In association with a virtual area (86), a first network connection is established with a first network node (12) present in the virtual area (86) and a second network connection is established with a second network node (14) present in the virtual area (86). Based on stream routing instructions, a stream router (106) is created between the first network node (12) and the second network node (14). The stream router (106) includes a directed graph of processing elements operable to receive network data, process the received network data, and output the processed network data. On the first network connection, an input data stream (80) derived from output data generated by the first network node (12) is received in association with the virtual area (86). The input data stream (80) is processed through the stream router (106) to produce an output data stream (112). On the second network connection, the output data stream (112) is sent to the second network node (14).

The graphical user interface (70) includes at least one communication control for managing communications with other network nodes and at least one browser control (114, 116, 118, 120) for navigating to different network resource addresses. Human perceptible realtime output is generated from realtime communication data relating to a realtime communication session with at least one other client network node. In the process of generating of at least some of the human perceptible realtime output, operation of the client network node (12) is managed based on at least one performance target. In the graphical user interface (70), a graphical representation of a network resource identified in connection with the browser control (114, 116, 118, 120) is displayed.
