The method includes receiving a request from a Physical (PHY) layer to transmit the MAC layer packet, wherein the MAC layer packet is transmitted in a predefined number of bytes that is determined in the PHY layer, and filling unfilled portion in the MAC layer packet with at least one fixed pattern in a predefined pattern set when a number of bytes that are unfilled is equal to or greater than 1. The unfilled portion includes total number of bytes that are unfilled in the MAC layer packet. Thereafter, the unfilled portion of the MAC layer packet is filled with a predefined pattern set when the number of predefined bytes is greater than the cumulative size of the available MAC PDUs arranged in the MAC layer packet.

    • The present invention provides a method and system for dynamically changing upper bound on size of data packets. In one embodiment, a transmitting device determines a need to change existing negotiated maximum size for an active connection when size of data packets for an application is switched, a new application is mapped to the active connection or Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) of broadband wireless network is changed. Then, the transmitting device sends a request message indicating a new negotiated maximum size for changing the existing negotiated maximum size to the receiving device. The receiving device sends a response message confirming change to the new negotiated maximum size to the transmitting device. Accordingly, the transmitting device and the receiving device uses the new negotiated maximum size for building data packets and decoding the received data packets respectively based on a predefined parameter (e.g., sequence number/action time) indicated in the request/response message.

    • A method and system for purging Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) blocks is provided. The method includes determining one or more ARQ blocks to be purged from an ARQ receive window. The one or more ARQ blocks to be purged are ARQ blocks that were lost between a start of the ARQ receive window and a position of an ARQ block for which a purge timer has expired. The method then sends information about the purged one or more ARQ blocks to an ARQ transmitting device. The ARQ transmitter device updates its transmitter window based on the received information. Thereafter, an acknowledgement is received from the ARQ transmitting device. The method then updates an ARQ receiver window based on at least one of the purged one or more ARQ blocks.
