The method further associates a second language, different from the first language, with a second text input apparatus of the mobile device. The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e ., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but features of the device provide additional variants that are not based solely on frequency and are provided by logic structures resident on the device. The device enables editing during text entry and provides a learning function. The disambiguation function can be selectively disabled and an alternate keystroke interpretation system provided. The device can facilitate selection of variants by displaying a graphic of a special key that enables a user to progressively select variants without changing the position of the user's hands on the device. If a field is determined to be a special input field, a disambiguated result can be sought from a predetermined data source prior to seeking results from other data sources on the device.

摘要： An improved method of transliterating non-Latin input within an e-mail address field (52) to the Latin equivalent. A routine in a handheld device (4) is structured to detect a triggering event that indicates an e-mail address (60) is being input into an e-mail address field (52). Following the triggering event, both prior and subsequent input is transliterated to Latin characters as these characters are required by Internet protocols. The transliteration routine may also be utilized to search an e-mail address book wherein names are recorded using both Latin and non-Latin characters.
