摘要： A robot-like machine (10) for treating a surface area (33) within a boundary perimeter (31) (such as cleaning a carpet within a room) is guided using data developed from a graphic depiction representing the area (33). The graphic depiction may be for example, a blueprint (29). The machine (10) includes a self propelled chassis (75) having a working head (73) such as a vacuum nozzle (73b) mounted on it. A computing section (65) provides signals causing the machine (10) to move across the surface area (33) and a position sensor (69) generates a feedback signal representing the actual position of the machine (10). The computing section (65) is arranged for processing graphic data and the feedback signal and responsively generating command signals directed to each motor module (67). The machine (10) is capable of selectively treating portions of the surface area (33) such as those portions which become soiled more quickly.

摘要： An applicator (10) for particulate carpet-cleaning compositions having a cylindrical body (14) formed of relatively rotatable inner and outer concentric cylindrical members (18, 16) in 360 DEG frictional nested engagement, separately attached non-rotatably to opposite wheel members (34, 36) of greater diameter than the body, and having dispensing apertures (24) in one cylinder which may be closed by the other depending on relative rotational positions. The cylindrical members (18, 16) are relatively rotatable very easily by opposed manual rotation of the wheels to dispensing positions, a closed position, and a filling position in which major filling openings (78, 80) in the cylindrical members (18, 16) are aligned. As the fibers (16) are cleaned, the brushes (13) cast the granules (11) toward a machine shroud (29) in a 'throw pattern' (41). A detachable, separately-powered pod (27) is connected to a machine-mounted vacuum nozzle (33) to pick up the dirt-laden particles (17) during brush-aided carpet vacuuming after initial cleaning. The pod (27) has first and second media (21, 23) selected to remove particles (17) of differing sizes from air flowing through the pod (27). During initial carpet cleaning when vacuum is not used, the pod (27) may be detached and used in another area for hand-vacuuming carpeted stairs and the like.

The machine (10) has a concentrically-mounted cyclone separator (21a) and a conical screen filter (23a) in series. The separator (21a) has air (25) flowing through it downwardly along a vortical path (37) and then upward along another path (45). Such upward-flowing air impinges on the outer surface (47) of the screen filter (23a) and many particles (17) adhering to such filter (23a) are dislodged. One or more additional media (67, 87) may be used to remove very fine particles (17).
