    • A method for using Internet mobility protocols with non Internet mobility- protocols, e.g., in a 3GPP or an SEA/LTE system, is described. A first gateway node comprising a home Agent (304) as well as a Legacy Gateway Node (LGN 302)m which may be a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), communicates with a second gateway node comprising a Local Mobility Agent (LMA 314) as well as a Legacy Serving Node (LSN 312), which may be a Servicing GPRS Support Node (SGSN), using a first protocol. The first protocol is a non Internet mobility protocol, e.g., the GPRS tunneling protocol GTP. A home address (HoA) for a mobile node is managed by the second gateway node. Updates regarding the location of the mobile node within a domain are received using a second protocol. The second protocol is an Internet mobility protocol, e.g., Mobile IP (MIP). Intra-domain mobility for the mobile node is managed by the second gateway node using the second protocol. To manage the local mobility the Local Mobility Agent (LMA 314) uses a local mobility protocol, e.g., Hierarchical Mobile IP (HMIP), Fast Mobile IP (FMIP), Proxy Mobile IP (PMIP), or Network-based Local Mobility Management (NETLMM).

    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate inter-system handover in a wireless communication system. Various aspects described herein provide for handover techniques that enable a target system to be prepared by a mobile device via a source system in order to minimize specific changes required to source system and/or target system. Techniques are described herein in which the radio link of a source system can be utilized to tunnel signaling messages which are in a format understood by a destination node in a target system. Further, fast inter-access handover can be facilitated by establishing a simple generic transmission tunnel between respective network nodes in source and target systems that handle intra-system mobility and providing a Layer 2 (L2) tunneling mechanism over the radio interface of each involved system technology.

    • Techniques for supporting roaming in wireless communication networks are described. In one design, an access point name (APN) and a preferred roaming protocol for a user equipment (UE) roaming from a home network to a visited network may be obtained. The APN may be associated with a data service requested by the UE. The preferred roaming protocol may be GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP), Mobile Internet Protocol (MIP), Proxy Mobile Internet Protocol (PMIP), etc. A suitable network entity to provide data connectivity for the UE may be determined based on the APN and the preferred roaming protocol. In one design, the network entity may be (i) a packet data network (PDN) gateway in the home network if the preferred roaming protocol is GTP or (ii) a home agent in the home network if the preferred roaming protocol is PMIP or MIP.

    • Disclosed is a method for establishing a data connection for a remote station. In the method, a wireless network capable of establishing a data connection is found. Based on determining that the remote station is a non-subscribing remote station that does not have an existing subscription relationship that supports establishment of a data connection using the wireless network, an initial connection identity (ICI) value is sent to the wireless network, wherein the ICI value includes a characteristic associated with a non-subscribing remote station. An authentication inquiry is received from the wireless network in response to the sent ICI value. A response value, responsive to the authentication inquiry, is generated in accordance with pseudo-authentication information associated with the ICI value. The response value is sent to the wireless network for allowing establishment of a data connection between the remote station and the wireless network.
