摘要： A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line telephones (10), analog wire line fax machines (12), and computer modems (13) is described. At the start of a telephone call, a data pump (52) interprets the digits dialed, and if a first set of digits are received, a control system (56) configures the data pump for processing analog fax data. If a second set of digits are received, the control system (56) configures the data pump (52) for processing analog computer modem data. If a telephone number is received, the control system (56) configures the interface system to pass additional data to a vocoder (62) which encodes any digitized audio information received.

摘要： In a half-duplex communication system in which additional delays in the communication channel may cause a message collision between a message and a response, a timer based collision prevention circuit (40) is utilized to prevent the message collision. The collision prevention circuit (40) determines if the message transmitted by a communication device will be repeated. If the message is to be repeated, the collision prevention circuit (40) sets a countdown collision timer (44) to a predetermined period of time shorter than the shortest repetition interval of the repeated message. A response is only sent to the communication device if the collision timer (44) has not expired. If the timer (44) expires, the collision prevention circuit (40) waits for the message to be retransmitted by the source device before sending the response to the communication device.

摘要： A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line fax machines are described. To process a fax, a source interface (24a) waits until an interface to a destination fax machine (18b) has been established before establishing an interface to a source fax machine (18a). The source fax transmission rate must be less than or equal to the destination fax transmission rate and the data rate of the digital channel. To establish the source fax interface at the proper rate, the source interface (24a) first selects an initial data rate from a set of standard fax transmission rates. The source interface (24a) sends unacceptable rate (failure to train) messages to the source fax machine (18a) until the source fax transmission rate is less than or equal to the data channel rate and the destination fax transmission rate. During fax processing, the destination interface (24b) inserts non-printing data (fill bits) if the destination fax transmission rate is greater than the source fax transmission rate. Fill bits are also inserted to compensate for transmission delays.
