    • A flame simulating apparatus (100) includes a transparent electronic display device (116) for displaying images of flickering flames. The electronic display (116) may be positioned in front of at least a portion of a simulated fuel bed (124) or other fireplace objects, so that the simulated fuel bed (124) or other fireplace object is visible through the display device (116). A backlight (118) may be spaced apart from the display device (116) to accommodate a portion of the simulated fuel bed (124) between the display device (116) and the backlight (118) to generate depth perception. To facilitate viewing of side margins of the display device (116), side reflectors (150) may be provided or the backlight (118) may be made wider than the display device (116). In some embodiments, a diffusion layer (217) is positioned proximate the transparent electronic display (216) and configured to be switchable between permitting viewing objects behind the display device (216) and preventing viewing objects behind the display device (216).

    • A normally white TN liquid crystal display (LCD) includes a liquid crystal layer for twisting at least one normally incident wavelength of visible light when in the off-state. Front and rear orientation layers (A0,A1) sandwich the liquid crystal layers therebetween with the front orientation layer causing a front liquid crystal tilt sense direction A F and the rear orientation layer causing a rear liquid crystal tilt sense direction A R different than the direction A F . Rear and front tilted retardation layers are located on opposite sides of said liquid crystal layer. Each of the rear and front tilted retardation layers has an optical axis defining an azimuthal angle Φ, and a tilt angle θ, where at least the tilt angle θ varies through the thickness of the layer. The azimuthal angle aspect Φ of an optical axis of the rear tilted retardation layer is oriented substantially anti-parallel relative to the rear tilt sense direction A R of liquid crystal molecules proximate the rear orientation layer, and the azimuthal angle aspect Φ of an optical axis of the front tilted retardation layer is oriented substantially parallel relative to the front tilt sense direction A F of liquid crystal molecules proximate the front orientation layer. At least one of the rear nad front tilted retardation layers includes at tilt angle θ which is substantially greater on the side of the tilted retardation layer (150,152) closest to the liquid crystal layer than on the side furthest from the liquid crystal layer.

    • A display system for stereoscopic displaying of images includes a pair of wide viewing angle displays arranged at an angle to each other, each display providing respective images formed by plane polarized light. A beam combiner is located between the displays such that the beam combiner transmits light from one display and reflects light from the other display, whereby the transmitted and reflected light are provided via the beam combiner in substantially the same direction. One of the wide viewing angle displays has a substantially vertical polarization and the other of the wide viewing angle displays has a substantially horizontal polarization. The display system provides for stereoscopic display of high-resolution images with wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles.
