    • A screen which may (13) or may not (13a, 13b) be smooth, within an elevator destination call entry device (11, 11a, 11b) presents a normal pattern of a twelve-key (20) or N-key (45) pattern, optionally with other keys (22-25) and information (29-31) and directory selection (33). In response to activation of a handicapped-service request button (17), with a smooth panel (13), an announciator (16) informs passengers to either tap the screen numbers of times, trace one or more numbers in script, or move a finger over a pattern (37) which is announced. Passengers may be instructed to simply enter one or more numbers on a screen (11a, 11b) which either has tactile outlines (42) of areas indicating numerical keys, or tactile areas which represent numerical keys themselves.

    • A method of operating an elevator system includes presenting a credential at a security panel disposed at an elevator system landing of a public area of a building. If the presented credential is correct a contact between the security panel and an elevator control system is opened. Opening of the contact allows for placement of a call via the elevator control system for an elevator car to the landing. An elevator system includes one or more elevator cars located in one or more hoistways. An elevator control system controls movement of the elevator cars. A security panel is operably connected to the elevator control system and located at an elevator system landing. Presenting a correct credential at the security panel opens a contact between the security panel and the elevator control system thus initiating a call of an elevator car of the one or more elevator cars to the landing.

    • Elevator service disruption information is communicated to passengers in a group elevator system (10). The group elevator system (10) includes a group of elevators (14a, 14b, 14c) operable to transport each of the passengers to one of a plurality of floors (L, F2, F3, F4, F5). A destination entry input device (30, 35) at each floor permits each passenger to enter destination input information. A dispatch controller (20) controls dispatching of the elevators (14a, 14b, 14c) based on the destination input information and determines when elevator service is disrupted. A communication device (30, 35), which is responsive to information from the dispatch controller (20) when elevator service is disrupted, provides to passengers at each floor notice of the service disruption and response instructions related to the elevator service disruption.

    • An elevator door assembly (20) includes a positioner (30) for controlling an orientation of an elevator door panel (22) during movement between open and closed positions. The positioner (30) biases the door in a direction generally perpendicular to the desired direction of door movement. The disclosed example includes a first positioner member (32) that remains in a fixed position. A second positioner member (34) is supported for movement with the elevator door (22). In disclosed examples, at least one of the positioner members (32, 34) provides a magnetic field that results in the biasing force. In a disclosed example, opposing polarities on permanent magnets are arranged to provide a repulsive force between the positioner members (32, 34), which provides the biasing force on the elevator door.
