    • An optical measurement instrument for monitoring characteristics of a liquid such as water. An optical beam is generated and directed into the thread (7) of liquid such that the beam is guided along the length of the thread by total internal reflection. Components of the beam that are affected by variations in characteristics of the liquid defined by the thread are detected. These components may be derived from the thread by causing the thread to impinge against a window (8) behind which the detector (9) is located or by detecting back-scattered components of the beam. Relatively long interaction lengths between the beam and the liquid can be achieved.

    • An apparatus for cutting a hole through a curved wall of a structure (1) such as a pipe. A cutting tool drive assembly supports a cutting tool (21) so that the cutting tool (21) is rotatable about a predetermined cutting axis (22) which is fixed relative to the drive assembly. The drive assembly is mounted to rotate about a support (8) which in use is fixed in position relative to the tube (1) to be cut. The drive assembly is rotatable about an axis (12) defined by the support, that axis (12) being perpendicular to the tube (1) at a position which is central to the position in which the hole is to be cut. The drive assembly is mounted on a support linkage (13-19) which enables it to move relative to the support (8) so as to vary the inclination of the cutting axis (22) relative to the support axis (12). The drive assembly or linkage (13-19) defines a head which bears against the tube surface and determines the position of the drive assembly relative to the tube (1). The geometry of the linkage (13-19) is such that as the drive assembly is moved about the support axis (12) the head follows the curved surface of the tube (1) and the cutting axis (22) is maintained substantially perpendicular to that surface.

    • A method and apparatus for determining the concentration of a target chemical species in a sample. A first spectrum is generated representing the absorbance of the sample across a range of wavelengths. The sample is then exposed to conditions which modify the concentration of the target chemical species in the sample, for example by irradiating the sample with UV or visible light which degrades the target chemical species, or generating an active species flux through the sample by exposing the sample to a corona discharge. The absorbance of the sample is then remeasured across the same range of wavelengths and differences between the two spectra are analysed to quantify the concentration of the target chemical species in the unmodified sample.

    • A split collar (1) for sealing a branch connection (8) which is connected to a pipe (2). The branch connection may be in the form of a ferrule from which a lead pipe extends. The lead pipe is flattened so as to be at least partially blocked, and the flattened portion (17) of the branch connection is then severed to define a stub projecting from the ferrule. A split collar is then clamped onto the pipe so that the stub and ferrule are enclosed within a cavity (3) defined by the collar and sealed by engagement between the collar and the pipe. The split collar forms a permanent fixture which reliably prevents any leakage from the branch connection stub, the ferrule, or cracks or holes in the pipe adjacent the branch connection which might appear at a later date.
