    • A mobile terminal (10) has multiple alternative protocol stacks (151, 152, ...) which correspond to the protocols used on multiple backbone networks (30a-30c) to which the mobile terminal can obtain access through one or more radio access networks (20a-20c) with which it is in communication using a common, predetermined low level signalling protocol. The radio access network (20) broadcasts signals (102) indicating the types of backbone network to which it is connected (and thereby the protocols they employ), and on encountering a signal indicating a new type of backbone network, a mobile terminal (10) may download a new protocol stack from the radio access network.

    • A post-processor (317) and method substantially for enhancing synthesized speech is disclosed. The post-processor (317) operates on a signal ex(n) derived from an excitation generator (211) typically comprising a fixed code book (203) and an adaptive code book (204), the signal ex(n) being formed from the addition of scaled outputs from the fixed code book (203) and adaptive code book (204). The post-processor operates on ex(n) by adding to it a scaled signal pv(n) derived from the adaptive code book (204). A gain or scale factor p is determined by the speech coefficients input to the excitation generator (211). The combined signal ex(n) + pv(n) is normalised by unit (316) and input to an LPC or speech synthesis filter (208), prior to being input to an audio processing unit (209).

    • A Thin Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonator (FBAR) (2), comprising a top electrode layer (30), a substrate (40), an acoustic mirror (42) that is formed atop the substrate, and a piezoelectric layer (32) that is formed between the top electrode layer and the acoustic mirror. The acoustic mirror is comprised of a plurality of stacked layers. One of the stacked layers forms a bottom electrode layer (34). At least another one of the stacked layers comprises a polymer material (36). The piezoelectric produces vibrations in response to a voltage being applied between the top electrode and the bottom electrode. The acoustic mirror acoustically isolates these vibrations from the substrate. The polymer material is preferably an electronic grade polymer and has a capability of withstanding a deposition of the piezoelectric layer at an elevated temperature. The layers forming the acoustic mirror which do not comprise the polymer material comprise a high acoustic impedance material such as, for example, tungsten (W). The polymer material can be spun on the substrate during fabrication of the FBAR.
