    • A portable communication device (100) has an antenna with predominantly upward antenna radiation patterns at GPS frequencies. The portable communication device (100) includes a housing with a base portion (240) enclosing base portion circuitry (241) and an upper clamshell portion (242) enclosing upper clamshell portion circuitry (243). The portable communication device (100) also includes a hinge assembly (244) coupled to the base portion (240) and the upper clamshell portion (242) for rotatably coupling the upper clamshell portion (242) to the base portion (240) and an antenna element (236) physically coupled to a first side (248) of the upper clamshell portion (242) and electrically coupled to a ground of the upper clamshell portion circuitry (243). The ground of the upper clamshell portion circuitry (243) is electrically connected to a ground of the base portion circuitry (241) by one side of the hinge assembly (244) located closest to a second side (250) of the upper clamshell portion (242) opposite the first side (248).

    • A wireless communication device (200) comprising an antenna system is disclosed. The antenna system includes a first plate conductor (202) and a second plate conductor (204) that can interact capacitively. The first plate conductor (202) and the second plate conductor (204) have surfaces that are at least partially overlapping and are in close proximity to each other. The antenna system further includes one or more feed points (206). In at least some embodiments, the antenna system will include one or more localized complex impedances (802), the one or more complex impedances (802) being coupled to at least one of the first plate conductor (202) and the second plate conductor (204) proximate a respective edge for modifying the corresponding electrical length. In at least some further embodiments, at least one of the first plate conductor (202) and the second plate conductor (204) will form at least a portion of the external housing of the wireless communication device (200). In at least some still further embodiments, the wireless communication device (200) will include a substrate having one or more conductive paths located between the first plate conductor (202) and the second plate conductor (204), where each conductive path will have an inductive length and one or more capacitors, which bridge portions of the inductive length.

    • An improved antenna system to channel counterpoise currents for an unbalanced antenna such as a helical monopole (102). A first conductor (104), or ground resonator, is coupled to a ground connection (208) near the antenna (102) and is located distally from a user to reduce electromagnetic exposure. The first conductor (104) presents a low impedance path at an operating frequency of the antenna such that RF currents are attracted onto the first conductor (104). A second conductor (108), such as a printed circuit board or user interface circuitry, is also coupled to the ground connection (208) of the first conductor (104). The second conductor (108) presents a high impedance path at the operating frequency of the antenna such that RF currents are diverted away from the second conductor (108) which is held closer to a user than the first conductor (104).
