    • An integral blood oxygenator and heat exchanger device (20) for oxygenating and heating or cooling a patient's blood during heart bypass surgery. The device (20) preferably includes a pleated blood filter (30) disposed within a gap (62) formed between the opposite ends (58 and 60) of the blood oxygenating medium (26). A blood inlet manifold (24) closely receives a tubular heat exchanging barrier (22) and directs blood flow around the barrier (22) to a blood outlet slot (56). The blood oxygenating medium (26) covers the blood outlet slot (56) so that blood must flow through the blood oxygenating medium (26) before reaching the blood filter (30). A vent port (74) and bypass port may be provided in the gap (62) formed by the opposite ends (56 and 60) of the blood oxygenating medium (26) upstream of the blood filter (30).

    • A multilayer hollow fiber body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56) useful, for example, in a blood oxygenator. The multilayer hollow fiber body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56) comprises a single hollow fiber mat (20) arranged in the form of a body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56) comprising a plurality of hollow fiber plies (31; 33). The mat (20) comprises a plurality of generally parallel hollow fibers (22) disposed at regular intervals, and a plurality of connecting fibers (24) holding the hollow fibers (22). The mat (20) is repeatedly folded over on itself along fold lines (FL-1; FL-2; ..., FL-N), each of which is at an oblique angle ( sigma ) to the hollow fibers (22), to form a multilayer hollow fiber body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56) in which the hollow fibers (22) of any ply (31) of the multilayer hollow fiber body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56) are disposed so as to cross the hollow fibers (22) of an adjacent successive ply (33) of the multilayer hollow fiber body (30; 30A; 30B; 30C; 30D; 56).
