    • A method and apparatus for providing a point-to-multipoint service (MBMS) to a mobile terminal UE (2) that moves from an area controlled by a first radio network controller SRNC (10) to an area controlled by a second radio network controller DRNC (10) is provided. Information regarding a transmission mode status indicating either a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication mode supported by the said second radio network controller DRNC (10) is returned to the first radio network controller SRNC (10) and said information is utilized there to determine if it is necessary to transmit MBMS data to the second radio network controller DRNC (10). MBMS data is transmitted from the first radio network controller SRNC (10) to the second radio network controller DRNC (10) via lur-interface only if the transmission status of the second radio network controller DRNC (10) is point-to-point, thereby preventing unnecessary data transmission between the first and second radio network controller and enhancing the efficiency of the radio resources between the second radio network controller DRNC (10) and the mobile terminal UE (2).
