    • An apparatus and method are described for a pattern driven self-adaptive graphics processing unit (GPU). The apparatus comprises: a graphics processing unit (1420) to process graphics commands and responsively render a plurality of image frames; ahypervisor (1410) to virtualize the GPU to share the GPU among a plurality of virtualmachines (VMs) (1430, 1440), the hypervisor subdividing GPU processing for each VM into a plurality of quanta; and scheduling logic (1412) to monitor GPU utilization including GPU busy time and/or GPU idle time for each VM during its allocated quantum and to store utilization data reflecting the GPU utilization during each quantum; the scheduling logic to predict a cost of waiting within a given quantum of a first VM based on the utilization data and to further predict a cost of yielding to a second VM, the scheduling logic to yield the GPU to the second VM if the cost of waiting is greater than the cost of yielding to the second VM.
