    • A method includes creating a plurality of function blocks (118). The function blocks (118) are defined by at least one user. The method also includes identifying a plurality of data flows between the function blocks (118). Each data flow includes at least one of: a flow of data from an output of one of the function blocks (118) and a flow of data into an input of one of the function blocks (118). The method further includes identifying at least one value for at least one property of one or more of the function blocks (118). The function blocks (118), data flows, and at least one property value define a serial interface protocol for communicating over a serial interface (126). The data flows may be identified by presenting symbols representing the function blocks (118) to the at least one user via a graphical user interface and allowing the at least one user to link inputs and outputs of the symbols.

    • A controller (104a- 104b) includes an execution environment (200) capable of executing an application for controlling a process element (102a-102b) in a processing environment (100) . The controller (104a-104b) also includes a web server (222) capable of being executed in the execution environment (200) . The web server (222) is also capable of providing direct web access to the controller (104a-104b) by providing information associated with at least one of the controller (104a-104b) and the process element (102a- 102b) over a network (110, 114a-114b) for display on a web browser. The information could be provided in the form of graphical images (304-306) embedded in web pages (302) or using a web service, a web form, or a smart client application. Also, the web server (222) could be executed as a background task in the execution environment (200) , the execution environment (200) could represent a deterministic execution environment, and the application could represent a real-time application.
