The system includes a large core hollow waveguide (30) having a reflective coating (40) covering an interior surface (32) of the hollow waveguide configured to guide a light beam (104). At least one area based beam splitter (50) is integrally formed with the hollow waveguide and has an angled reflective surface (52) with a selectable height (H) relative to the interior surface. The angled reflective surface is oriented to redirect a predetermined amount of the light beam (114) based on the height of the angled reflective surface.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention are directed to optical multiprocessing buses. In one embodiment, an optical broadcast bus (100) includes a repeater (106), a fan-in bus (102) optically coupled to a number of nodes and the repeater, and a fan-out bus (104) optically coupled to the nodes and the repeater. The fan-in bus (102) is configured to receive optical signals from each node and transmit the optical signals to the repeater, which (106) regenerates the optical signals. The fan-out bus (104) is configured to receive the regenerated optical signals output from the repeater (106) and distribute the regenerated optical signals to the nodes. The repeater (106) can also serve as an arbiter by granting one node at a time access to the fan-in bus.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention are directed to beamsplitters that include optical elements to correct for beam offset. In one embodiment, a beamsplitter includes a first plate having two approximately parallel and opposing planar surfaces and a partially reflective layer coating one of the planar surfaces, and a compensator plate having two approximately parallel and opposing planar surfaces. The compensator plate is positioned so that an incident beam of light passing through the compensator plate acquires a first beam offset. Subsequently, the incident beam of light with the first beam offset passing through the first plate is split into a reflected beam and a transmitted beam by the partially reflective layer where the transmitted beam has a second beam offset that substantially cancels the first beam offset such that the transmitted beam is approximately parallel to and aligned with the incident beam.

Each image-rotation prism has the property that as an image-rotation prism is rotated, an image passing through the image-rotation prism rotates at twice the angular rate of the image-rotation prism. Embodiments of the present invention include optical systems that can be used for board-to-board communications and employ the image-rotation prisms to compensate for arbitrary axial rotations and misalignment of optical signals and can be used to direct optical signals output from transmitters on one board to particular detectors of a detector arrangement located on an adjacent board.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention are directed to single prism beamsplitters and compound beamsplitters formed from combining one or more of the single prism beamsplitters. In one embodiment, the beamsplitters can be configured to produce one or more split beams of light that can emerge at angles other than 90° to one another. The prisms of the beamsplitter embodiments are configured so that light propagating through prisms encounter one or more intermediate planar surfaces at various angles with respect to the path of the light. A certain number of the intermediate planar surfaces can be angled so that the light transmitted along a particular path undergoes total internal reflection within the prism. A number of other intermediate planar surfaces are angled so that the light transmitted along a particular path does not undergo total internal reflection.
