    • Image forming devices 10, hard imaging methods, and methods of determining a transfer function are described. According to one embodiment, an image forming device 10 includes an image engine 18 configured to provide a marking agent upon media 38, processing circuitry 14 configured to control the image engine 18 to form a test image upon the media 38 having a specified coverage of the marking agent and to access measurement data indicative of a measured coverage of the marking agent of the test image, storage circuitry 16 configured to store information comprising associations of a plurality of specified coverage values of the marking agent and a plurality of resultant coverage amounts of the marking agent formed upon the media by the image-engine 18 corresponding to respective ones of the specified coverage values, and wherein the processing circuitry 14 is further configured to access image data of an image to be formed to identify one of the specified coverage values of the marking agent to be formed upon the media 38 to form the image, to modify the one specified coverage value using the stored information and the measurement data to provide an imaging coverage value, and to control the image engine 18 using the imaging coverage value to form the hard image.

    • A method is provided of correcting brightness without, or with reduced, hue-shift of a pixel color represented as a set of primary-color values in a reproducing device's color space, by means of a composite transformation that has the property that it preserves the hueless character of gray pixels and is made up of independent primary-color related transformations. At least some of the primary-color related transformations include applying a virtual color transformation to a primary-color value of the pixel color to be brightness-corrected, thereby transforming the primary-color value into a primary-color value of a virtual gray-idealized color space. A brightness change is applied to the primary-color value in the virtual color space, and the inverse of the virtual color transformation is applied to the brightness-changed primary-color value. Thereby brightness-changed primary-color value is transformed back to a primary-color value of the reproducing device's color space.
