摘要： An arrangement including an electrodeless discharge lamp having a sealed envelope enclosing an ionizable medium capable of emitting radiant energy when subjected to a radio frequency field and a circuit for operating the lamp. The circuit includes an oscillator for generating an output signal at a given radio frequency, an RF amplifier responsive to the oscillator output signal, and an output tank circuit including an induction coil and a capacitor connected in parallel. The RF amplifier includes a pair of semiconductor switches operating in a Class E mode. The induction coil is positioned in close physical proximity to the medium in the envelope for coupling to the medium an electric field having a magnitude sufficient to initiate ionization of the medium and a magnetic field for maintaining the ionization. In a preferred embodiment, the amount of EMI/RFI noise generated in the circuit is reduced by symmetrically driving the induction coil.

摘要： A tri-model thermal switch (34) for use in a preheat-type discharge lamp. The thermal switch includes a glass bulb (40), first and second electrical leads (36, 38) sealed into and passing through the glass bulb (40), and a bimetallic element (42) disposed within the bulb and having first and second end portions. The first end portion of the bimetallic element (42) is affixed to the first electrical lead (36) while the second end portion of the bimetallic element is formed to be in contact with the second electrical lead (38) at a first elevated temperature higher than ambient temperature. The bimetallic element is spaced from the second electrical lead at ambient temperature and at a second elevated temperature higher than the first elevated temperature. During lamp operation, the thermal switch (34) produces a double hot spot on the cathode by electrically shorting the cathode lead-in wires. As a result, the electrode temperature is lowered sufficiently to cause an improvement in the lumen maintenance and life of the lamp.

摘要： A mercury vapor discharge lamp such as a negative glow discharge lamp includes a light-transmitting envelope (10) containing a noble gas fill material. An anode electrode (18) and a cathode electrode (16) are spacedly located within the envelope (10). An amalgam-forming material (30) for regulating the mercury vapor pressure of the lamp is disposed within the envelope (10). In order to increase the mercury vapor pressure and consequently the light output of the lamp at low ambient temperatures, a heating element (38) is disposed within the envelope (10) and in close thermal proximity to the amalgam-forming material (30). A thermostatic switch (40) coupled to the heating element (38) is activated when the temperature adjacent the amalgam-forming material (30) is below a predetermined temperature.

The electrode feedthrough assembly is particularly useful in an external reservoir arc tube wherein an interior region of a feedthrough tube is utilized as a reservoir for the lamp fill material. The electrode feedthrough assembly includes a feedthrough tube (16), an electrode assembly (26) attached to the feedthrough tube (16) and a connection wire (76). The feedthrough tube (16) has a closed end (46) external to the arc tube. The feedthrough tube (16) and the closed end (46) thereof are formed in a single process, preferably by deep drawing, without welding, crimping or fusing. Passages to the interior of the feedthrough tube are provided by crimping the electrode support rod to the feedthrough tube with a six jaw crimping arrangement wherein two of the crimping jaws (64, 65) are shorter than the other four (60-63). The connection wire (76) is attached to the feedthrough tube (16) and includes a portion (80) on the axis of the tube (16). The connection wire (76) assists in retaining the electrode feedthrough assembly in the arc tube (10) during sealing.

The lamp of the present invention includes an envelope (1) and a selectively reflecting silicon dioxide layer (3) on at least a portion of the inner surface of the envelope (1). The lamp further includes a phosphor coating (4) disposed on the selectively reflecting layer (3). The silicon dioxide layer (3) has a coating weigth of from about 0.1 to about 4 mg/cm2. The selectively reflecting layer (3) comprises at least about 80 weight percent silica having a primary particle size from about 5 to about 100 nm with at least about 50 weight percent of the silica having a primary particle size from about 17 to about 80 nm.
