    • Aspects of the invention pertain to matching a selected image/photograph against a database of reference images (324) having location information. The image of interest may include some location information itself, such as latitude/longitude coordinates and orientation. However, the location information provided by a user's device (308, 310, 312) may be inaccurate or incomplete. The image of interest is provided to a front end server (502), which selects one or more cells (452, 454, 456) to match the image against. Each cell may have multiple images and an index. One or more cell match servers (504) compare the image against specific cells based on information provided by the front end server. An index storage server (506) maintains index data for the cells and provides them to the cell match servers. If a match is found, the front end server identifies the correct location and orientation of the received image, and may correct errors in an estimated location of the user device.

    • Methods, systems, and apparatus for performing quantum annealing. In one aspect, a method includes encoding a solution to an optimization task into an energy spectrum of a first Hamiltonian, wherein the first Hamiltonian is represented by a graph comprising nodes and real edges, the graph defining a plurality of loops; mapping the first Hamiltonian to a second Hamiltonian, the second Hamiltonian consisting of one or more local two-body interaction terms given by one or more dual variables, the mapping comprising: for a loop in the graph representing the first Hamiltonian, determining a constraint that corresponds to the loop; and subjecting one or more of the dual variables to the constraint; providing the second Hamiltonian to a quantum computing device for solving the optimization task.

In one aspect, an apparatus includes a primary quantum system; an auxiliary quantum system comprising a plurality of modes and that interacts with the primary quantum system, wherein: the auxiliary system interacts with the primary quantum system through one or more couplings, wherein the one or more couplings are controllable; a steady state of the auxiliary system, a response function of the auxiliary quantum system, an auxiliary system operator, and a spectrum of the auxiliary quantum system are determined to meet a respective condition; and the auxiliary system is controllable to relax the primary quantum system to an equilibrium state using a controllable function of the auxiliary system operator.
