    • A voltage source converter (30) comprises first and second DC terminals (32, 34) for connection to a DC network (54), the voltage source converter (30) further comprising an AC phase terminal (36) for connection to a phase of an AC network (54), the voltage source converter (30) including a limb (38) connected between the first and second DC terminals (32, 34), the limb (38) including first and second sub-limbs connected between the first and second DC terminals (32, 34), each sub-limb including a phase element, each phase element including a plurality of switching elements and at least one AC terminal, the or each AC terminal of each phase element operably connected to the AC phase terminal (36), the plurality of switching elements of each phase element configured to be switchable to selectively interconnect a DC side voltage at a DC side of the phase element and an AC side voltage at an AC side of the phase element, each sub-limb further including at least one energy storage device connected at the DC side of the phase element, wherein the voltage source converter (30) further includes a controller (62) programmed to control the switching of the switching elements of the phase elements so as to control each phase element to switch between: a first operating mode to control the configuration of an AC voltage waveform at the or each corresponding AC terminal to have a positive phase shift relative to an AC voltage waveform at the AC phase terminal (36); and a second operating mode to control the configuration of an AC voltage waveform at the or each corresponding AC terminal to have a negative phase shift relative to the AC voltage waveform at the AC phase terminal (36).
