    • This invention relates to improved architectures for digital audio broadcast (DAB) receivers, in particular multiband DAB receivers. A digital audio broadcast (DAB) receiver, the receiver comprising: an rf input to receive rf signals in at least two receive frequency bands; a local oscillator having a local oscillator signal output; a mixer having inputs coupled to said rf input and to said local oscillator and having an output to provide an IF frequency signal; and an output to provide an output signal from said IF frequency signal; and wherein said local oscillator comprises a phase locked loop (PLL) including a tunable voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and a programmable divider coupled to an output of said voltage controlled oscillator to provide said local oscillator signal output; at least one of said two receive frequency bands being associated with a plurality of different division ratios of said programmable divider; wherein said voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) has a plurality of selectable VCO frequency bands; and wherein said local oscillator further comprises a VCO band selector to select a said VCO frequency band; whereby said at least two receive frequency bands are covered by said receiver by a combination of said VCO band selection and said plurality of different division ratios.

    • This invention relates to apparatus and methods for radio receivers, in particular low (IP) frequency receivers. Embodiments of the invention are particularly suitable for digital audio broadcast receivers. A low-IF radio receiver circuit, the circuit comprising: an rf input (202) for a received rf signal: a first local oscillator (208) having a quadrature output to provide a quadrature first local oscillator signal at a first frequency; a quadrature first mixer (206) coupled to said rf input and to said quadrature output of said first local oscillator and having a quadrature first mixer output, and said first mixer and said first local oscillator being configured to provide quadrature mixing of said quadrature first local oscillator signal and said received rf signal to downconvert said received rf signal to a first quadrature IF signal at a first IF frequency; a bandpass filter (210) coupled to said quadrature first mixer output and having a filtered output to provide a bandpass filtered first IF signal; a second local oscillator (214) having a second local oscillator ourput to provide a second local oscillator signal at a second frequency; a second mixer (212) coupled to said filtered output of said bandpass filter and to said second local oscillator and having a second mixer ouput, said second mixer and said second local oscillator being configured to provide mixing of said second local oscillator signal and said bandpass filtered first IF signal to upconvert said bandpass filtered first IF signal to a second IF signal at a second IF freqquency , wherein said second IF frequency is greater than said first IF frequency; and an output coupled to said second mixer output to provide an output signal from said second IF signal.

    • This invention relates to a phase locked loop circuit which is particularly suitable for digital audio broadcast (DAB) receiver. A phase locked loop (PLL)(128) for providing a phase locked output signal from a reference signal comprises an input to receive said reference signal; a variable frequency oscillator (132), said oscillator being operable in a selected one of a plurality of frequency bands and having a frequency control input (tune I/P) for controlling a frequency of the oscillator, and a band select input for a band select signal for selecting a said frequency band, and an output for providing said phase locked output signal; and a phase detection system (138), said phase detection system having a first input coupled to said reference signal input, a second input to receive a signal derived from said oscillator output, and an output (139) for providing a frequency control signal to said frequency control input of said oscillator; and wherein said PLL is further configured to adjust a gain of said phase detection system (138) responsive to at least one of said frequency control signal and said band select signal.
