    • An apparatus and method for producing particles using supercritical fluid with enhanced mixing. The process includes a vessel having an inner surface defining a chamber. A high-speed shear or turbulent mixer is incorporated inside the vessel in order to create a region of enhanced mixing (mixing zone). A supercritical fluid pump communicates with the first inlet, and supplies supercritical fluid into the mixing zone through the first inlet. A solution pump communicates with the second inlet, and supplies solution into the mixing zone through the second inlet. A mixer assembly includes a motor drive and a rotor. The rotor is in the mixing zone and can mix the solution and the supercritical fluid. Particles are produced when the solution and the supercritical fluid are pumped into the mixing zone while the rotor is mixing. The design of the mixer and the direction of the flow of materials into the chamber creates a plug flow in the mixing zone. The plug flow allows the particles to be removed from the mixing zone as soon as they are precipitated. Because of the high intensity homogeneous mixing and plug flow configuration, the particle uniformity is enhanced and production of composite particles facilitated.

    • A method and an apparatus for continuously producing particles from an emulsion by supercritical fluid extraction. The emulsion includes a solute suspended or dissolved in the supercritical fluid soluble first phase. The supercritical fluid and the emulsion contact each other such that the first phase dissolves from the emulsion into the supercritical fluid and the solute precipitates to form a suspension in a non supercritical fluid soluble second phase of the emulsion. The supercritical fluid carries away the dissolved first phase. The solvent bearing supercritical fluid, together with the solute suspended in the second phase, is removed from an extraction chamber at a rate that is about the same as the rate that the emulsion and the supercritical fluid flow into the extraction chamber. Thus, a constant mass and pressure is maintained in the extraction chamber and the particles are produced continuously.

    • The present invention provides methods and apparatus for producing composite particles using supercritical fluid as a plasticizing and extracting agent. The methods employ providing a polymer, wax and/or a lipid substance that is solid at standard temperature and pressure to be contacted with a supercritical fluid in vessel (10) to form a melt, either before or after the substance is contacted with a solution made up of solute dissolved in a solvent. The supercritical fluid plasticizes the substance and extracts the solvent from the solution, resulting in the formation of a two-fraction system including a first melt-rich fraction that includes the plasticized melt and dispersed fine particles of precipitated solute, and a second fraction that includes the supercritical fluid and the solvent. The first fraction is expanded in expansion chamber (160) across a pressure drop resulting in formation of composite particles that include the polymer, wax and/or lipid and the solute.
