    • A rotary mechanism arranged to propel fluid, such as a pump (1), and/or to be driven by a fluid, such as a motor. The rotary mechanism includes a rotor assembly (5) having a plurality of piston members (21) distributed about its periphery. The rotary mechanism includes a rotary member (7) in peripheral engagement with the rotor assembly (5). The rotary member (7) includes a plurality of piston receiving formations (27) in its periphery for receiving the piston members (21), the arrangement being such that during rotation of the rotor assembly (5) the piston members (21) move into and out of the piston receiving formations (27), and a plurality of conduits (33,35) arranged to connect peripheral portions of the rotary member to an interior portion thereof. The rotary mechanism includes a flow separation device (13) having an inlet port (9) for receiving fluid into the rotary mechanism and an outlet port (11) for enabling fluid to exit the rotary mechanism, a first passageway (39) for connecting the inlet port (9) with the interior side of at least one of the conduits (33,35) formed in the rotary member and a second passageway (41) for connecting the outlet port (11) with the interior side of at least one of the conduits (33,35) formed in the rotary member. The rotary member (7) is rotatable relative to the flow separation device (13) and at least some of the rotary member conduits (33,35) periodically align with the first and second passageways (39,41) formed in the flow separation device thereby enabling the fluid received from the inlet (9) to flow outwards towards a first peripheral portion of the rotary member (61), wherein it is transported to a second peripheral portion (59) of the rotary member by the rotor assembly (5), and for the fluid to flow away from the second peripheral portion (59) of the rotary member to the outlet port (11), wherein the flow separation device (13) is constructed and arranged to separate the incoming and outgoing flows.
