    • The object of the invention is to create an arrangement for protecting the stator winding of a synchronous machine which dispenses with the need for a three-phase transformer for protecting the stator against accidental earthing. The exciting transformer (2) which feeds the exciting arrangement (3) is connected to the terminal of the synchronous machine (1) with its exciting winding (7). The displacement voltage is taken from the secondary side of the exciting transformer (2) by a single-phase low voltage transformer (4). A resistance (5) limits the current in the event of an accidental earthing of the stator. The displacement voltage is then imparted to the star point of the exciting transformer (2) by a single-phase transformer (6). In order to detect accidental earthings, the current that flows through the single-phase transformer (6) is measured by a relay (8) which then triggers a switching-off signal (9). The potential conditions in the exciting transformer and in the exciting arrangement connected thereto are not altered by these measures in relation to the conditions that reign when a separate transformer is provided to protect the stator against accidental earthing.
