摘要： A method of distributing digital content to consumers is provided. A playback device is provided at a consumer location and is in communication with a remote control centre through a communications network. The method involves downloading one or more items of digital content to a portable storage device; requesting authorisation from the remote control centre to view an item of digital content stored on the portable storage device; determining the consumer's entitlement to view the item of digital content; and issuing authorisation to the playback device to enable viewing of the item of digital content at the consumer location if the consumer is so entitled.

摘要： Local controllers (10) communicate with a central control (40) to manage locally stored digital content, e.g. to delete content and bill for use. The controllers (10) may receive content via portable storage devices (100), e.g. mp3 players, DVDs, memory cards, and the like, which may in turn receive content from download stations (110), e.g. in retail establishments, that communicate with the central control (40). Content may be encrypted using controller-specific keys that may be issued to controllers (10) by the central control (40). Individual content items (20) may be encrypted using DRM keys that the controllers (10) may retrieve from the central control (40), each time content access is required. Checks may ensure that local controllers (10) are not tampered with, e.g. before downloading or accessing content. Other features include the provision of catalogue data and software upgrades, local key generation based on controller configuration, and on-transfer of content to other local devices.
