摘要： The present invention is a crosslinked automotive wire comprising a metal conductor, a flame retardant insulation layer surrounding the metal conductor, and optionally, a wire jacket surrounding the insulation layer. The automotive wire passes the specifications of one or more several automotive cable testing protocols: (a) SAE J-1128, (b) ISO-6722, (c) LV 112, (d) Chrysler MS-8288, and (e) Renault 36-36-05009/-L. In particular, the flame retardant insulation layer is prepared from a crosslinkable thermoplastic polymer and a metal carbonate. The flame retardant composition for making the insulation layer demonstrates economic and processing improvements over conventional solutions. The present invention is also a method for preparing a low tension primary automotive wire and the automotive wire made therefrom.

摘要： Scorch is inhibited during the free-radical crosslinking of a crosslinkable polymer, e.g., an EPDM, by incorporating into the polymer before melt processing and crosslinking a scorch inhibiting amount of a derivative, preferably an ether, ester or urethane derivative, of a TEMPO compound, e.g., 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrocarbylpiperidin-1-oxyl. The scorch inhibitors of this invention perform as well, if not better, than their 4-hydroxy- tetrahydrocarbylpiperidin-1-oxyl counterparts in similar polymer compositions and under similar conditions in terms of scorch inhibition and ultimate degree of crosslinking, but exhibit less volatility and less migration within the polymer composition.

摘要： The present invention is a rheology-modifiable polymeric composition. The resulting rheology-modified polymer is prepared from at least one polymer which upon forming free radicals preferentially degrades or carbon-carbon crosslinks. The present invention permits suppression of the preferential reaction while permitting the polymer to be coupled through a free-radical trapping species. Suppressing the undesirable degradation or carbon-carbon crosslinking reaction and permitting the desirable coupling reaction yield a rheology-modified polymer.

摘要： The instant invention is a crosslinkable polyethylene composition, a method of making the same, and articles made therefrom. The crosslinkable polyethylene composition according to instant invention includes a polyethylene component, a crosslinking agent, and a crosslinking coagent. The crosslinking agent is an organic peroxide, and the crosslinking coagent is an alkadiene, alkatriene, or alkatetraene compound comprising at least two terminal carbon-carbon double bonds. The crosslinkable polyethylene composition may, optionally, further include a scorch inhibitor, a cure booster, a stable free radical, one or more conventional additives, blends thereof, and/or combinations thereof. The method for producing a crosslinkable polyethylene composition according to instant invention includes the steps of: (1) providing a polyethylene component; (2) providing a crosslinking agent, wherein the crosslinking agent is an organic peroxide; (3) providing a crosslinking coagent, wherein the crosslinking coagent is an alkadiene, alkatriene, or alkatetraene compound comprising at least two terminal carbon-carbon double bonds; (4) melt blending the a polyethylene component, the crosslinking agent, and the crosslinking coagent at a temperature in the range of less than the decomposition temperature of the crosslinking agent; and (5) thereby forming the crosslinkable polyethylene composition. The article according to instant invention includes the crosslinked product of a polyethylene component; a crosslinking agent, wherein the crosslinking agent is an organic peroxide; and a crosslinking coagent, wherein the crosslinking coagent is an alkadiene, alkatriene, or alkatetraene compound comprising at least two terminal carbon-carbon double bonds.

摘要： An improved process for crosslinking a polyolefin polymer is described. The process involves grafting a silane material onto the polyolefin based polymer in the presence of a free radical generating initiator material and then hydrolyzing the silane material to form crosslinks. By using an effective molar ratio of silane material to free radical of 40 or greater in the grafting reaction, premature crosslinking is controlled and the grafted polymer can be shaped first and then crosslinked. In another aspect of the invention, the crosslinking process is improved by adding a catalyst for the hydrolysis catalyst to the surface of a shaped article made from the grafted polymer. Grafted polymer and articles made from the grafted polymer, particularly fibers, are also disclosed.
