    • A heated wood sample (46) having a water content exceeding 20 percent is compressed axially in the direction of the grain or fibres of the sample in a compression mould (10). Oppositely directed compressive forces are applied not only to the end surfaces of the sample, for example by means of a hydraulic cylinder (18), but also to side surface parts of the sample as frictional forces. The sample may be arranged within a compression chamber which is at least partly defined by longitudinally overlapping side wall parts (30, 37, 47, 48), which are mutually displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the chamber, and these side wall parts may be pressed into frictional engagement with the sample (46) for example by means of an inflatable bag or an inflatable hose section (32, 34), and means may be provided for mutually displacing the side wall parts so as to apply frictional compressive forces to the wood sample. The side wall parts or friction plates may engage with longitunally spaced sections of the sample (46), if desired. However, if a substantially uniform compression along the length of the sample is desired, the side wall parts are preferably arranged in pairs (30, 37 and 47, 48) of oppositely positioned wall parts each of which extends along substantially the total length of the sample. The hydraulic cylinder (18) by means of which compressive forces are applied to the end surfaces of the sample, may simultaneously displace one pair of the oppositely positioned side wall parts longitudinally in relation to the other pair of side wall parts. The longitudinally compressed wood sample may be bent and shaped much more easily than a corresponding non-compressed sample.

    • A humidity indicator consists of a beaker-like housing (1) with an inside pocket (6) containing a hygroscopic salt (9), a wick (8) extending from the bottom of the pocket (6), up around its top edge and down to a level below its bottom above a vessel (12) formed in the bottom part of the housing (1). When an air-tight cap (5) is removed or replaced upside-down allowing air to enter through slits (10), the humidity in the ambient air contacts the salt (9), and if the relative humidity is equal to or higher than the deliquescence threshold of the salt (9), the latter will absorb water from the air, after which this water with the salt dissolved in it will be transported by the wick (8) into the lower vessel (12). The quantity of salt or liquid transported is a measure of the total duration of those time intervals, during which the relative humidity has been at least equal to the deliquescence level of the salt (9).

    • A humidity indicator comprises a transparent tube (1) containing a fibrous strip (3) impregnated with a hygroscopic salt and folded in its dry state into a zig-zag shape, the tube (1) being closed by a cap (6) until use. When used for measuring the relative humidity in a concrete floor (8) with a view to judging its suitability for glueing a floor covering (not shown) to it, a hole (9) is bored in the floor (8), after which the indicator, whose cap (6) has been removed immediately before, is inserted in the top of the hole (9), sealing lips (7a) ensuring an airtight and vapour-tight joint. When equilibrium between the space inside the tube (1) and the hole (9) has been established, and if the relative humidity in these spaces is equal to or greater than the liquefaction value for the hygroscopic substance in the strip (3), the water absorbed by the hygroscopic substance will soften the adhesive holding the paper fibres together, and under its own weight the strip will straighten out at least partly, indicating to an observer that the humidity is above some predetermined value.

    • In a humidity indicator, in which the sensor (4) is encapsulated in an envelope (1, 2), the novel feature is that the envelope (1, 2) has a very low permeability for water vapour, to such an extent that changes in the humidity in the surrounding air takes considerable time - from 14 days up to one year or more - to manifest themselves in the space (3) containing the humidity sensor (40). With this arrangement, a time-integrating effect is achieved, making the indicator suitable for long-time monitoring of e.g. building structures without being influenced by short-term humidity increases, such as caused by the weather or an occasional escape of steam. In the embodiment shown, the humidity indicator (4) is a piece of fine paper impregnated with both a hygroscopic salt and a substance changing colour when moistened, whereas a similar dummy sensor (6) is only impregnated with the latter. This makes it easier to ascertain whether the colour of the humidity sensor (4) proper has in fact changed.
