    • A turbo-generator system generates electricity from the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine (1). The electric current generated by the generator (11) (e.g. a switched reluctance machine) is controlled so as to maintain the turbine (3) at a first pre-set rotational speed. The amount of electric current demanded from the generator (11) is limited or reduced if the electrical system (17) cannot accept a greater electric current or if the exhaust gas pressure upstream of the turbine (3) is too great. In such cases, the proportion of the exhaust gas permitted to bypass the turbine (3) is controlled so as to maintain the turbine (3) at a second pre-set rotational speed that is slightly greater than the first. The turbine's preset speeds are chosen to maximise electrical generating efficiency and for turbine safety. The system maximises the amount of electricity generated, avoids excessive exhaust gas back-pressure on the engine (1), and avoids overloading the electrical system

    • A switched-geometry arrangement and method for processing outputs from microphones (40.1-40.M) by: receiving signals from the microphones at respective inputs; switching (41.1-41.M) the signals received at the inputs between outputs; summing (42.2.1-42.M.N) desired ones of the outputs and performing array processing (43) to produce a switched-geometry output signal. Operating the switches alters the configuration of microphones connected to the array processor (43), and the switching and subsequent processing may be adaptively operated in dependence on the output signal. Performing the switching in analogue circuitry and subsequent processing digitally allows lower cost, size and power consumption than fully digital processing. Most advantage is expected when a large number of microphones (say 50 or more) is connected to a much smaller number of array signal processor inputs, and especially when the analogue switches and adders are integrated into a silicon chip along with a microphone (e.g. MEMS device) array.

    • A camera (30) uses an electro-active device (11) to position a movable lens. The electro-active device (11) comprises an electro-active structure in the form of a continuous electro-active member (12) curving in a helix around a minor axis (13) which is in itself curved for example in a helix around a major axis (14). The continuous member (12) has a bender construction of a plurality of layers (21 and 22) including at least one layer of electro-active material so that it bends, on activation, around the minor axis (13). Concomitantly with the bending, the electro-active structure twists around the minor axis. Concomitantly with that twisting, relative displacement of the ends (16) of the device (11) occurs due to the combination of the twisting around the minor axis (13) and the fact that the minor axis (13) is curved. This structure of the electro-active device (11) is compact and provides for linear displacement, thereby making it suitable for positioning the lens of the camera (30).
