    • A sub-ambient pressure, air bearing slider is disclosed for positioning a magnetic read/write head proximately to a rotating disk. The slider includes first and second rails extending along the side of the slider facing the rotating disk from a leading edge of the slider to a trailing edge of the slider. Each rail has a thigh region extending at an angle from the leading edge to a lateral side of the slider, a foot region extending at an angle from a lateral side of the slider toward the trailing edge of the slider, and a knee region at a lateral side of the slider coupled between the foot and thigh regions. Recesses are provided to shape the first and second rails. A central recess provides a volume for sub-ambient pressure. One or more tails can be placed within the central region to prevent the shifting of pressure completely to one side of the slider. The design of the first and second rails leads to a more uniform flying height for the slider and magnetic head over all tracks of the disk.

Upon start-up of the disk drive, if stiction at the head/disk interface occurs, the voltage to the spindle motor and/or actuator motor may be rapidly fluctuated so as to cause a pulsing of the spindle motor and/or actuator motor. Pulsing both the spindle motor and actuator motor creates forces in a plurality of radial directions to allow the head(s) to break free from the disk(s) in the direction of least resistance. Moreover, as the resonant frequency of the spindle motor varies depending on the number of heads that are stuck, the firmware pulses over a range of frequencies including the various resonant frequencies of the spindle motor corresponding to various numbers of heads stuck.

    • A disk drive for flying at extremely low flying heights. The drive includes a disk clamp for clamping one or more disks within the disk drive, with the clamp exerting a substantially uniform pressure at the circular line of contact between the clamp and the disk. The disk clamp includes a raised circular wall around an outer radius of the clamp, which wall is formed as part of and integrally with the rest of the clamp. The wall serves to increase the structural rigidity of the clamp in a single axial section of the clamp, thereby providing a "stress barrier" to the transmission of localized stresses from the screw points. Thus, the pressure exerted by the clamp on the disk is evenly distributed around the entire clamp, and the distortion normally occurring at the inner diameter of the disk with conventional disk clamps is greatly reduced.

    • A disk drive having a head and disk assembly designed to transfer data to and from the disk at very low flying heights, for example 2.5 mu '. Due to factors including shock, disk drive vibration and changes in ambient pressure, the head will occasionally fly below the average flying height during rotation of the disk. At these lower heights, the head may contact asperities protruding from the disk surface. The present invention operates with burnishable disks, such that, during operation of the disk drive and rotation of the storage disk, the repeated contact of the head slider with the higher asperities causes the asperities to be worn down, or burnished. In this way, each of the asperities on the disk surface are reduced to be below the flying height of the head when the head flies at lower than normal flying heights. Thus, the danger of damage to the head and/or disk due to intermittent contact of the head with the otherwise protruding asperities on the disk is removed.
