摘要： Herein is disclosed a modified ethylene vinyl alcohol polymer (EVOH) comprising an oxygen scavenging functional group. Preferably, the modified EVOH comprises structures (IV), (V), and (VI) wherein x in an integer greater than or equal to 1, y is an integer greater than or equal to 1, z is an integer greater than or equal to 1, and R comprises a cycloalkenyl group. The modifier EVOH is useful in oxygen barrier applications, such as forming an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Also disclosed are methods of modifying ethylene vinyl alcohol polymers, and using the modified EVOH to make packaging articles with a superior barrier to entry by atmospheric oxygen.

摘要： An esterification or transesterification process comprises the steps of reacting a first polymer with a first alcohol as a by-product. The second alcohol has a lower boiling point than the first alcohol, preferably at least about 100 DEG C lower. A gas stream is vented from the extruder apparatus that comprises both the first alcohol and the second alcohol, At least part of the first alcohol condensed from the gas stream, thereby forming a liquid stream, which is then fed back into the reactive extruder. The condensed first alcohol then continues to further the extent of the reaction in the extruder producing the second polymer.

摘要： Herein is disclosed a method for the batch transesterification of a polymer, comprising: (i) providing the polymer as a melt feed or in solution; (ii) reacting the polymer in a batch reactor with a first alcohol in the presence of a catalyst under conditions wherein transesterification occurs, to form the transesterified polymer and a second alcohol; (iii) removing the second alcohol from the transesterified polymer; (iv) stripping residual first alcohol and byproducts from the transesterified polymer, to yield purified transesterified polymer; and (v) pelletizing the purified transesterified polymer. This method is operable at a low temperature and with low levels of catalyst. It also is capable of relatively high conversion of acrylic units in the polymer.

摘要： Herein is disclosed an oxygen barrier composition comprising an oxygen barrier polymer and an oxygen scavenging polymer. The composition can be in the form of a physical blend or a cross-linked blend, and can further comprise a compatibilizer, a transesterification catalyst, or both. Preferably, the oxygen barrier polymer is poly(ethylene/vinyl alcohol) (EVOH), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinylidene dichloride (PVDC), or polyamide other than MXD6. Preferably, the oxygen scavenging polymer comprises an ethylenic backbone and a pendant cyclic olefinic group, or the oxygen scavenging polymer is a polyamide derived at least in part from a xylene diamine-based monomer. The oxygen barrier composition can be formed into an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Such layers and articles, and methods for making same, are also disclosed.

摘要： Herein is disclosed multilayer packaging articles comprising an oxygen barrier layer comprising ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) (an "EVOH oxygen barrier layer"); an oxygen scavenging layer adjacent thereto, wherein the oxygen scavenging layer comprises a polymer comprising an ethylenic backbone and a cycloalkenyl group having structure (I) wherein q1, q2, q3, q4, and r are independently selected from hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl; m is -(CH2)n-, wherein n is an integer from 0 to 4, inclusive, and, when r is hydrogen, at least one of q1, q2, q3 and q4 is also hydrogen; and a third layer adjacent to the oxygen scavenging layer. In addition to the oxygen scavenging function, the oxygen scavenging layer functions as a tie layer to substantially inhibit delamination of the EVOH oxygen barrier layer from the third layer of the packaging article.

According to the method, low molecular weight components are solvent extracted from polymers, preferably in a continuous process, optionally facilitated by ultrasonification, heat, or both, wherein the polymers are comprised generally of ethylenic backbones having pendant groups selected from alkyl acrylate groups, cyclic olefinic groups, and/or benzylic groups. The solid polymer resins so treated can meet FDA requirements for food packaging applications.
