摘要： A packet of data is received from a LAN and transmitted over a WAN, by retaining the native LAN frame format of the packet during transmission across the WAN. Thus, LAN data may be transmitted over a SONET point-to-point link within a WAN network without the interim steps of creating ATM cells or other WAN transport packaging protocols. Instead, the LAN data may be transmitted directly over the SONET link as raw data, and reconstructed directly at the receiving end of the SONET link. A first buffer stores data from the LAN so that a corresponding packet size may be determined, and a second buffer stores data from the WAN to account for any speed difference between the LAN circuitry and WAN circuitry.

摘要： A flexible modular interconnect system is provided which utilizes a backplane having a plurality of module receiving slots (14) and a plurality of circuit modules (18), selected ones of the circuit modules being mounted in at least selected ones of the slots. The modules may be of a variety of different types. First and second switches (22, 24) are provided for each circuit module with selected lines from module logic being connected to each of the switches. The first and second switches (22, 24) for each module are interconnected and the first switch for the selected modules are connected to the second switch for adjacent modules. Selected information concerning each module is provided to each adjacent module and control logic (26) is provided which is responsive at least in part to the received information concerning the adjacent module for controlling the state of an appropriate switch means. The switch means may also be controlled from an external source (48). By selectively controlling the state of the switches, the modules may be flexibly interconnected.
