    • A wavy face ring having a smooth face and a method of manufacturing this wavy face ring. In particular, the method includes providing a ring blank having a face surface and a peripheral surface and applying a predetermined force to the peripheral surface of the ring. This force deforms the face surface of the ring blank into a first deformation pattern. The face surface of the ring blank is then treated while the force is being applied to the peripheral surface of the ring blank. Finally, the force is removed from the peripheral surface of the ring blank to allow the face surface of the ring to relax and assume a second deformation pattern. A wavy face ring assembly is also provided that includes opposing rings mounted about a rotating shaft. One of the rings is stationary with respect to the other and one of rings has a wavy face treated by a lapping machine. The ring can be a seal ring or a thrust ring.

    • A secondary mechanical seal assembly is used on a shaft (12) that is rotatable within a housing (14) to seal both gaseous and liquid medium (20). The assembly (18) includes a stationary seal face element (26) that is fixed relative to the housing and a rotating seal face element (24) that is fixed relative to the shaft (12). One of the seal face element (24-26) back surfaces (34) includes at least one slot (40) configured to produce a wave on the front surface (32) of the seal face element (24-26) when the shaft (12) is rotated. The wave creates an opening force that is sufficient to control wear and prolong seal life when the secondary seal assembly (18) is exposed to a gaseous medium. When exposed to a pressurized liquid medium, the hydrodynamic loading from the liquid medium alters the seal face element (24-26) waviness, and increases the closing force due to the action of the pressurized liquid on the back surface of the seal face elements, such that excessive leakage is prevented.

    • A fluid handling machine having a shaft, a radially disposed housing, and a backup seal. During normal operation, the backup seal is concentric with and radially spaced from the shaft. The backup seal includes a first annular portion located adjacent the backup seal chamber and a second annular portion preferably made of carbon graphite. The backup seal is configured to engage the housing such that when the fluid pressure in the backup seal chamber exceeds a predetermined level, a sufficient axial force is applied to the first annular portion and transmitted therethrough to the second annular portion to cause the second annular portion to close radially into sealing engagement with the shaft.
