    • Techniques that provide relatively low cost and complexity remote sensing capability are disclosed. The sensors can be easily deployed and monitored by a single operator, with minimal opportunity for human error, and without the need for a visual display. During deployment, the sensor is adapted to record a message including a verbal description of the location. Other useful information, such as the operator's name and sensor type may also be included. The voice locator message is transmitted in response to the sensor triggering, thereby allowing the operator to hear the location of the triggered sensor. Additional device functionality may include sensor signal analysis (e.g., confidence testing) and a power conservation. The devices have numerous applications (e.g., military and SWAT operations,) and can be adapted to detect intrusion, perimeter breach, movement, vehicles, and other detectable events.

    • A low cost diagnostic system for testing the airborne static discharge systems and the grounding systems for aircraft (10). The present invention is a passive electrostatic detection scheme comprising an array of inexpensive, miniaturized sensors (30, 40, 60) for measuring the detected E-field disturbances from aircraft (10). The measurements are taken on the runway (20) upon arrival and indicate whether the aircraft (10) had an appreciable accumulated charge indicating a failure of the electrostatic discharge system. The system further verifies that the ground discharge devices are properly working and any charge is dissipated upon landing. In one embodiment the measurement information is transmitted to a central location where the aircraft (10) and the measurement data are matched and maintenance is scheduled for aircraft (10) having high levels of electrostatic charge.

    • A multi-tone CW radar (14) is used to project signals from an antenna (22) and to receive returns with the same antenna. The phase differences between the outgoing signals and the returns are analyzed to determine the existence of motion and the range to a moving object (10).A model is made which has range as its major parameter. A waveform associated with the phase difference between outgoing signals and returns for one of the tones is compared to templates produced by the model to determine which has a range that most closely matches. By varying the range parameters, when a match is detected the range to the object can be obtained even if its motion is pseudorandom . If the range is measured with multiple units it is possible to measure the location of the object. This can be done assuming a grid and algorithmically combining the ranges from the units.
