    • A method of connecting a hydraulic component (21) to a plastics hydraulic pipe (12a, 12b) by forming the component from a harder material than the pipe with an internally screwed bore (25) for reception of the pipe, the screw thread (26) formed in the bore being of a tapering form with the internal diameter of the bore decreasing with distance from the open end of bore, and screwing the component (21) onto the pipe (12a, 12b) with the component forming a complementary thread on the outside of the pipe as the component is screwed on. The method is particularly suitable for connecting a component such as a pipe end fitting, a pipe connector, a valve housing, a cylinder body or a damper casing formed from glass reinforced plastic or metal with a pipe formed from plastics material.

    • An annular seal (39) for use in a hydraulic cylinder in which a piston (12) moves along a bore (13) in a cylinder body defining a hydraulic working chamber (16) ahead of the piston, the seal having a forward lip portion (40) exposed to the hydraulic pressure in the working chamber which seals the working chamber against egress of fluid from the working chamber around the piston, and a rearward lobe portion (41) which has a rear face which seats against a support surface (12a) on the piston or body, the lobe portion sealing against the ingress of air or other contaminants around the piston into the working chamber. In the unpressurised condition, in the vicinity of the lobe portion the rear face (42) of the seal (39) slopes (9) away from the support face (12a) towards the working chamber (16) so that when the seal is pressurised the rear face is not forced past the support surface into the clearance (x) between the piston (12) and bore (13). The seal (39, 52) may be of the twin lip and lobe type used to seal an annular piston to inner and outer walls of an annular bore or to seal a cylindrical piston within a cylindrical bore or of the single lip and lobe type (52, 58, 59) in which the seal is held captive in the walls of an annular or cylindrical bore to seal against a moving annular or cylindrical piston or is held in a recess in a moving piston for sealing with a mating bore.
