    • A powerline signal test apparatus has a housing, a pair of prongs protruding from the housing, a powerline module coupled to the pair of prongs within an interior region of the housing. The powerline module is configured to process a first data signal in a first format. The apparatus further has a processor coupled to the powerline module. The processor is configured to initiate transfer of first test data characterized by a first data rate from the pair of prongs through a portion of a powerline network to a target node and initiate receipt of second test data characterized by a second data rate. Moreover, the apparatus has a signal strength indication for the portion of the powerline network associated with the second test data characterized by the second data rate. Furthermore, the apparatus has an output device coupled to the housing and configured to output the signal strength indication.

Each of the second input/output ports is numbered from 1 through N, where N is an integer greater than 1. A plurality of modem devices are coupled to the virtual local area network device. The plurality of modem devices are numbered from 1 through N, where each of the plurality of modem devices being coupled respectively to one of the plurality of second input/output ports and where each of the plurality of modem devices also being coupled to one of a plurality of power lines numbered from 1 through N, each of the power lines being capable of communicating information to and from the second data source connection.

At least one female power outlet is provided on a second portion of the face. The female power outlet is coupled to the pair of power plug members.

The power line gateway device has a power line device coupled to an interface device and a coupling device. In a specific embodiment, the interface device is coupled to a data connection. The power line device is capable of converting a data signal from the data connection into a power line signal. In a preferred embodiment, the system also has one or more shielded cables coupled to the coupling device and an outlet device coupled to at least the one or more shielded cables. In a preferred embodiment, the outlet device is adapted to convert the power line signal into at least an Ethernet signal or a RS232 signal.
