    • A temporary fastener (10) that fastens two adjacent workpieces (40, 42). The fastener includes a shank (12) that extends through a hole of the workpieces (40, 42). Extending from one end of the shank is a conical shaped head (20). The fastener also contains a pull stem which has a head (28) located adjacent to the blind end of the shank. The stem head (28) is pulled through the shank (12) to expand and tightly fasten the shank (12) to the workpieces (40, 42). The fastener is removed by drilling through the head and the shank. The diameter of the conical shank head is smaller than the diameter of the drill bit (54) so that part of the head (20) does not become attached to the drill bit and scratch the workpiece (40). The conical shape of the head also reduces the volume of the fastener material to further reduce the size and amount of chips produced during the drilling process. The tightly engaged shank prevents the fastener from rotating during the drilling operation.

    • Blind rivet stems and method of making the same resulting in reduced cost in the fabrication of the rivet and increased strength in the installed rivet. In accordance with the method, after the shear ring (20) is formed on the stem, the relief (26) adjacent the shear ring on the tail-former end (22) of the stem is formed by a rolling operation, with the cylindrical portion of the tail (34) of the stem being knurled in the same or in a separate rolling operation. If desired, a shoulder collar may also be formed at the tail end of the stem prior to or subsequent to the rolling operation or operations. The knurled stem tail provides better gripping by the installed rivet and increases the strength thereof by providing a relatively high and constant pull relatively independant of grip, and by tending to prevent the extrusion of the tubular sleeve (56) out of the hole in the parts being joined on the passage of the stem tail into the portion of the tubular sleeve within the hole, both due to the tendency of the knurled region to carry the sleeve material with it during drawing of the rivet, and for the further reason that the knurling provides a good grip on the shear ring (20) and the end of the sleeve, yet has sufficient open spaces within which the sleeve material may extrude if required.

    • A locking apparatus for blind fasteners providing improved yield and fatigue performance of the blind fasteners. The locking apparatus utilizes a locking collar (28) which will slide over the fastener stem (16) and within the tubular rivet sleeve (10) of the fastener without preforming into the locking groove (24) on the stem. The locking collar (28) is formed so that upon the pulling of the stem (16) during installation of the blind fastener, specially formed tapered reliefs (38, 42) in the locking collar (28) then adjacent the locking groove on the stem (16) cause the region of the locking collar immediately thereabove to be encouraged tightly inward against the locking groove to provide a particular tight fit in the locking groove. At the same time, a specially tapered top end (48) of the locking collar (28) is flared outward into the recess in the fastener head, and the tubulars shank expands in compression to take up any clearances thereabout, all of the foregoing occurring before the breaking of the pulling portion of the stem occurs. The net result is that the flared portion of the locking collar (28) fits tightly in the recess, the other end of the locking collar fits tightly in the locking groove (24) and the cylindrical portion therebetween fits tightly on the adjacent portion of the stem and tightly within the adjacent portion of the rivet sleeve (10), independent of reasonable variations in the dimensions of the various components of the blind fastener within the dimensional tolerances of such component.
