    • In a desalination plant (1) comprising an evaporator (2), a separator (3) for separating droplets of brine from the mixture of steam and such droplets produced by the boiling process in the evaporator (2), and a condenser (4) for condensing the steam into freshwater leaving the plant at an outlet (18), the novel feature is that the separator (3) is of a type with "distributed effect", e.g. consisting of a number of cells bounded by zig-zag baffles (24), each such cell performing a separating function. With this arrangement, the flow cross-sectional area and hence the horizontal space requirement of the separator (3) does not have to exceed that of the evaporator (2), in contrast to Prior-Art plants, in which the separator comprised a large inverted dish requiring much space to operate, as the centrifugal separating effect solely took place at its periphery.

    • In a plate evaporator of the falling film type every second plate interspace constitutes an evaporation space (28) in which evaporation liquid is distributed across the width of the plates in order to run downwardly on the plates, whereas the rest of the plate interspaces constitute condensation spaces (30) for a heat emitting vapour. The invention concerns a particular arrangement for supplying evaporation liquid to the evaporation spaces (28). According to this arrangement a distribution chamber (27) is delimited within the uppermost part of each plate interspace constituting an evaporation space (28). This distribution chamber extends across the whole width of the plates and communicates with an inlet channel for liquid, extending through the plate package and formed by aligned openings (16) in the plates. In the upper part of each condensation space (30) several sealing means (25) are arranged horizontally spaced from each other. Each sealing means (25) forms together with the two adjacent plates a transferring chamber (29) that is closed from the condensation space (30) but through small holes (17, 18) in the plates communicates with at least one distribution chamber (27) and one evaporation space (28). Heat emitting vapour may flow into each condensation space (30) from above through the gaps formed between the horizontally spaced sealing means (25).

    • In a plate heat exchanger for evaporation of a liquid by means of a heat emitting vapour every second plate interspace forms an evaporation passage (28) and the rest of the plate interspaces form condensation passages (30). Aligned openings (16) in the plates form an inlet channel through the plate heat exchanger for introduction of evaporation liquid into the evaporation passages (28). For enabling use of a large inlet area of each condensation passage (30) and a large outlet area of each evaporation passage (28) the plate heat exchanger is arranged in a container (1), the interior of which is divided in two chambers (6, 7) by the plate heat exchanger itself and a partition (5). Sealing means (13, 26) are arranged in the plate interspaces in a way such that the evaporation passages are closed from one chamber (6) but communicate with the other chamber (7) along the edges of the plates, whereas the condensation passages (30) communicate with said one chamber (6) along the edges of the plates but are closed from the other chamber (7).
