    • The invention relates to a method for encoding high dynamic range images, both static images and video frames. The method comprises the steps of: a) acquiring (100) a high dynamic range image in floating point format; b) calculating (101) the dynamic range of the acquired image; c) calculating the image average luminance; d) calculating a parameter dynamic_range (102) by adding to or subtracting from the dynamic range value calculated at step b) a predetermined value, the addition or subtraction of such predetermined value depending on image average luminance calculated at step c); e) multiplying (103) the values of the pixels of the acquired image by a factor equal to 2 -dynamic_range ; f) raising to a power equal to 1.0/(2.2+add_gamma) the values of the pixels calculated at step e), where add_gamma is a value higher than or equal to zero; g) reducing the number of bits used for encoding the image pixels (105) such to convert the image in a format with a dynamic range lower than that of the acquired image; h) compressing the lower dynamic range image (106). The invention relate also to a corresponding image decoding method and to devices for encoding and decoding images and videos.

    • The invention relates to a method for encoding HDR images (102), of the type wherein the HDR image (102) is encoded in a first data stream (103) containing a LDR image with colour range lower than that of the HDR image, and in a second data stream (104) containing a residual image obtained from the HDR image and from the LDR image. The method provides to - process the LDR image (1012, 1018) and the HDR image (1011) so as to bring them in the same colour space with samples in logarithmic space; - generate (1020) a first residual image in logarithmic space by subtracting the HDR image with samples in logarithmic space from the LDR image with samples in logarithmic space; - generate (1021, 1024, 1025) the residual image by processing the first residual image in logarithmic space so as to adapt it to a format required as input by an encoder which inserts the residual image in the second data stream; - generate (1018) a first look-up table that maps the values of samples of the LDR image on the values of the processed LDR image in logarithmic space; - generate (1023) a second look-up table that maps the values of the residual image samples inserted in the second data stream on the values of the processed residual image in logarithmic space; - insert the first and the second table in the first (103) or in the second (104) data stream. The invention relates also to a method for reconstructing a HDR image encoded in two data streams containing a LDR image and a residual image respectively.

    • A method for processing image and video data, comprising providing high dynamic range image data (HDR) and a corresponding low dynamic range image data (LDR). The LDR image is encoded in a legacy code stream, while a residual code stream is generated and encoded containing data necessary for the reconstruction of the HDR image in a decoding phase. To generate the residual code stream, LDR image data are processed so as to obtain a processed LDR* image, then a component data of the HDR image and a corresponding component of the processed LDR* image are selected and residual data of the selected component data are calculated by dividing the component of the processed LDR* image data by the component of the HDR image data. The residual data of the selected component are scaled into the range of values comprised between 0 and 1 and are then encoded in a residual code stream. A decoding method is also disclosed which allows reconstruction of an HDR image from a legacy code stream and a residual data code stream.
