    • The present invention provides a probe permeameter (1) comprising a source of compressed gas (15, 20), a pressure regulator (2), at least one open coil of fine tubing (5) and at least one valve controlled coil of fine tubing (6, 7, 8) disposed in series, pressure indicating means (3A, 4A) respectively upstream and downstream of said coils, and a gas nozzle (19) operatively associated with a sealing annulus (21), whereby with the nozzle urged into contact with a test specimen, gas is delivered at laminar flow and wherein the pressure indicating means indicates the differential pressure generated in the specimen and hence the permeability thereof. The permeameter is adopted for use with a manually pressurisable gas source (15) which allows the device to be readily transported.

    • A liquified gas cryostat having an inner wall (3) to contain the liquified gas (4) and an other wall (2) spaced therefrom is provided, in the space between the two walls, with multilayered insulation (5), formed by coating a woven fabric with a thin layer of gold or aluminium to create small, self-defined areas of metallization, and the space is evacuated. Also in the space is located at least one radiation shield (6) of material which exbibits high thermal conductivity and negligible electrical conductivity. The shield (6) extends beneath and is continuous around the inner wall (3) over the volume intended to be occupied by the liquified gas and may be vapour-cooled or cryo-cooled. Where more than one shield is used, both or all of them may be vapour-cooled or cryo-cooled. Alternatively, one or more of the shields may be vapour-cooled and the remainder cryo-cooled.

    • A moling apparatus (2) comprises a housing (4) having a head (8) for penetrating ground, an anvil (16) disposed in the housing connected to the head, a hammer (18) disposed in the housing and spaced therefrom by resilient restraint means (20). A vibrator unit (42) is spaced from the hammer and arranged to transfer vibration to the housing and the hammer. In a first mode of the apparatus, vibration transmitted to the housing causes fluidization of the surrounding ground to allow progressive penetration of the apparatus. In a second mode, the braking effect of the ground on the head causes the hammer to move against the resilient means and impact the anvil thereby driving the head through the ground, said apparatus being operable at or between said modes.

    • The present invention relates to a method for the detection of at least one of a group of chemical species which method comprises: contacting an admixture of the group of chemical species with dry solid phase microbeads and allowing or causing the group to adhere onto the microbead surfaces to form coated microbeads, suspending said coated microbeads in a biologically acceptable vehicle and injecting them into a suitable animal host and recovering antisera from said host and utilising said so-formed antisera to bind to any one of said group in a sample; preferably the group of chemical species include polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as PCBs. The invention also provides a method for removing such chemical species from the liquid stream.
