    • The invention concerns a high voltage AC transmission cable system for transmitting power between two points, each connected to one or more power networks, and a method to operate the system. At least one transformer is arranged at each end of the AC transmission cable, wherein at least one said transformer is arranged to operate the transformer at a voltage whereby losses due to reactive power transport and dielectric losses are minimized. The AC cable is run at a variable voltage regulated such that the voltage is a function of the load for the transmission cable. This operating voltage is not necessarily the same as the nominal voltages in the connection points. In other aspects of the invention a control and communication system and a graphical user interface for carrying out the method is described.

    • In an AC electric generator such as the Powerformer TM voltages are induced in phase windings (1 A , 1 B , 1 C ) connected at one end to each other at a neutral point (5, N) and at an opposite end to phase terminals (5 A , 5 B , 5 C ).     • For a synchronous electric generator an earth fault detection or protection circuit is provided using extracted (35 A , 35 B , 35 C ) third order harmonic currents ( I a3 , I b3 , I c3 ) in the phase windings (1 A , 1 B , 1 C ) at locations at the neutral point (N, 5). From the third order harmonic currents, directional criteria ( D a , D b , D c ) for each phase winding are calculated (35) indicating the relative magnitude of the third order harmonic current reduced by the other third order harmonic currents. The directional criteria are compared (37) to a normal value valid and it is signalled, when at least one of the directional criteria deviate too much from the normal value, to a control device (39) for disconnecting or disabling the phase windings. Two other criteria, a fault detection criterion ( FC ) and a range control criterion ( RC ) are also calculated (41; 49) that can prevent the control device from issuing any signal. The earth fault protection circuit can detect earth faults occurring close the neutral point and can be used in all synchronous machines, which have a neutral point that is isolated or earthed through a large impedance, and which are connected directly to either a non-effectively earthed power network or an effectively earthed power network, for instance high voltage generators of the type Powerformer TM .
