    • Disclosed is an image display comprising a face plate wherein a metal back layer is formed on a phosphor screen and a rear plate having a plurality of electron-emitting devices. The metal back layer is provided with an electrically interrupting portion formed in a certain pattern. The electrically interrupting portion is provided with a coating layer which contains a component dissolving or oxidizing a metal (Al) and heat-resistant particles such as silica particles, and the surface of the coating layer has projected and recessed portions caused by the heat-resistant particles. A getter layer which is segmentalized by the coating layer is formed on the metal back layer as a film. At least a part of a light absorptive layer lying under the interrupting portion of the metal back layer may preferably have a surface resistance from 1 x 10 to 1 x 10 ohm/□. Consequently, there can be obtained an image display having excellent pressure resistance wherein the discharge current is suppressed, and such an image display can be manufactured by a process having less steps.

    • An image display comprising a face plate (6) whose inner surface is provided with a phosphor screen and a rear plate having many electron-emitting devices is disclosed. The phosphor screen comprises a light-absorbing layer (8), a phosphor layer (9), a metal back layer (10) which has a separating portion (10a) and is formed on the phosphor layer, a high-resistance covering layer (11) which is so formed across the separating portion of the metal back layer as to extend over the metal back layer on both sides of the separating portion, a heat-resistant fine particle layer (12) formed on the high-resistance covering layer, and a getter layer (13) which is formed as a film lying over the metal back layer and divided by the heat-resistant fine particle layer. Consequently, by improving heat resistance characteristics, breakage and deterioration of the electron-emitting devices or the phosphor screen due to abnormal discharge can be prevented in an image display such as an FED, and thus a high-luminance, high-quality display can be realized.

The getter layer formed on the getter dividing layer and the getter layer formed on the metal back layer are sufficiently separated, discharge chaining is prevented and the image display device having excellent operation stability is provided.

    • A method of forming a metal back−attached fluorescent surface comprising the step of dissolving/removing or rendering highly resistant a specified area in a metal film formed on a fluorescent surface by using a liquid that dissolves or oxidizes the metal film. After part of a metal film is removed or rendered highly resistant, an insulating or highly−resistant inorganic material may be applied to the remaining ends thereof. Alternatively, an insulating or highly−resistant inorganic material may be added to a dissolving or oxidizing liquid to dissolve/remove or render highly resistant a metal film, and at the same time treating ends are coated with an inorganic material. Accordingly, a metal back−attached fluorescent surface is obtained that is protected against electron emission elements by discharging and the destruction/deterioration of the fluorescent surface.
