    • A monothilic refractory composition which comprises (1) a spinel material comprising a MgO-Al2O3 spinel phase and/or a MgO-Al2O3 spinel-corundam material comprising a MgO-Al2O3 spinel phase and a MgO-Al2O3 corundam phase, both materials containing 2 to 20 wt % of magnesia, in an amount of 20 to 70 wt %, (2) a magnesia material having a particle diameter of 0.3 mm or less and containing 55 to 85 wt % of particles having a particle size of 75 mum or less and having a magnesia content of 90 wt % or more in an amount of 3 to 12 wt %, (3) an alumina cement having a calcia content of less than 20 wt % in an amount of 3 to 10 wt %, (4) an ultra fine powder containing silica as a primary component in an amount of 0.3 to 1.5 wt %, and (5) an alumina material in the balanced amount. The monothilic refractory composition has high heat resistance and also exhibits improved resistance to corrosion and the permeation of slag.
